Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Pub Names

One thing I didn't really think about till I visited Ireland is the fact most pubs are named after the people who run them. Whereas here in the UK, it seems there is a list about 100 pub names and every pub has one of these names.

Is there any examples pubs in the ROI having English style names?

There's a pub in my town called The Cock Tavern. :pac:

The Duke, The Slaughtered Lamb. There's lots, which I can't think of at the moment.

In my own town there's Major Tom's (owner isn't called Tom), The Stagger Inn and The Horse and Jockey. Then there's nine or ten pubs named after owner(s)

The Bailey, The Courthouse Bar, The Washington Inn, An Bróg, The Old Oak, The Crane Lane, An Cruibin, An Bódhran, The Grafton, Door 51.

That's just a small few of the popular bars in Cork City.

Camden in London has a few bars that have original names. They'll generally be the music centric places. The Wheelbarrow, The Barfly (though that's a franchise bar), The Flower Pot. And outside of Camden places like Nambucca.

It's not hard to find lots of bars with different names.

there's the elephant and castle in dublin too, but you're not too likely to get names such as the crown and buccaneer or ye olde crusader outside the pale..

Nope, no chain of "red lions" it's just the most popular pub name in England. Many pubs are not brewery owned, it's usually just town and city centre ones really, most are landlord owned in other areas, but have agreements with major breweries for supply. Just like every pub over here does, except the UK pubs have much wider choice of drinks, real ales being the big difference.

Well I know of 3 Cock Taverns in Dublin

and the Fitzgerald group has a Quays bar in Dublin and Galway but generally as they are mostly individually owned and not brewery owned it's down to the owner

Yeah, you could quite easily do a pub crawl of just pubs called 'The George' in any city and not be too lacking.

First day in Galway for college, we were to meet up for a couple of drinks that night in the King's Head, but I was slightly later than the others.

Walking down Shop St., asked this guy where the King's Head was ...

"Between the Queen's legs, of course!"

Oldest known Galway joke, apparently! >.<
