Language Requirement

Hey there Starting 6th year on Friday and I'm fairly set on what i want to do in University, which is Computer Science in NUIG.
Still pretty confused on whether I need a third language or not? It's not listed in the requirements for the course, but do i still need a third language for matriculation purposes?
If anyone could clarify it would be great :pac:

A third language must be included among the other subjects for Arts, Human Sciences, Law, Social Science, Commerce, Medicine and Health Sciences and some other degrees.

Entry requirements
Minimum Grade Higher C3 in two subjects and passes in four other subjects at Higher or Ordinary Level in the Leaving Certificate including: Irish, English, Mathematics, a laboratory science subject (i.e. Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Physics with Chemistry (joint), Agricultural Science) or Technology and any two other subjects recognised for entry purposes.

Additional requirements
Minimum Grade D3 in the Higher Level or B3 in the Ordinary Level Leaving Certificate paper in Mathematics. Or, alternatively obtain a pass in the Special Engineering Entrance Examination in Mathematics (held in the University).

Doesn't seem to be required, no.

I believe Randylonghorn is correct.

There's a useful tool at www.qualifax.ie that allows you to check for courses that do/don't require certain things. For example, you can search for courses that don't require maths, and so on.

Anyway, if you search for courses in NUI Galway that do not require a third language, you get a list of 25 courses, including GY350: Computer Science & IT.

Ax with all of these things, it's no harm to contact the admissions office of the college to be sure. But to be fair to them, you'd be better off waiting until this year's admissions activity has died down a bit before contacting them about anything to do with next year.

Thanks for the replies.

My careers teacher kinda rattled my nerves today, I thought i could do the course but she told me I still need a third language to "Get in the door" of the college as such, and that just because its not a requirement for my course doesn't mean that I don't need it.

I see what she means - when I was thinking of going to Trinity and looked at their courses, because of how it was laid out I thought I didn't need to pass certain subjects to get in. Other colleges lay it out differently and it might be clearer for NUIG. Each course in each college has its own specific requirements, but there are also specific requirements to actually get into the college in the first place - e.g. 5 passes; i.e. if you got 4 A1s and 400 points but failed 3 subjects, you don't have 5 passes and can't do a course for 300 points in that college. It should be on the college's website somewhere.

I'll be pretty gutted if i suddenly find out i can't get into NUIG.

Judging from this you don't. I wouldn't worry if I were you, but to really put yourself at ease I'd email the college.

Id imagine you do. You need a third language for National Universities. Which would be Trinity UCD UCC NUIM and NUIG. Im almost 100% sure because i looked into it last year for college.

But what I'm asking is can I do CS & IT in NUIG, without having a third language? Since its not listed in the requirements?

That used to be true until a few years ago, but is no longer the case. It now only applies in certain faculties. I suspect the OP's careers guidance teacher in this case is not fully aware of the change. It's not articulated very well in the NUI matriculation requirements, because they didn't just remove it - instead they inserted a separate statement about how you could substitute another subject for it in certain faculties. So if you don't read the note, you would still think a third language is required. The note says: "For entry to the Colleges/Faculties of Engineering and Science any other subject accepted for Matriculation Registration purposes may be substituted for the Third Language."

But as has been previously stated, the best way to get a clear and definitive answer is to email the admissions office in NUIG with a clear question, such as: "I am sitting my Leaving Cert examination in June 2013. Can you please confirm to me that if I wish to pursue course GY350: Computer Science & IT, starting in Sptember 2013, then I do not need to have a third language (i.e., a language other than English and Irish)?"
