Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Women wearing shoes that are too big?

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed the amount of women that wear shoes that are too big for them? You know they way there is a gap at the back of the heel or too much at the front on sandals? I see a lot of female celebrities wearing shoes like this but lately (this summer) I noticed a lot of Irish women doing the same.

Am I missing something here or what?

Some of my heels are a size bigger than my normal size, but that's because I have wide feet. Getting my feet into heels (especially if they are slightly swollen from walking during the day) is a nightmare so the extra size makes it easier to put heels on. I doubt I could squeeze my feet into heels in my regular size. Unfortunately it means the gap at the back :(

Another reason is sale stock, no point passing up a pair of heels that you really like in a size/half-size bigger if they don't have your regular size

This is a common thing with women. I hate seeing that gap between the back of the heel and the shoe, or else at the toes.

I think it must be because lots of women buy shoes when out in town and their feet are possibly slightly swollen. Or else, the shoes are too high and their feet are moving downwards in the shoe due to gravity.

Well that's my curiosity satisfied. Can't be good for the feet though.

Yeah a few people have mentioned this themselves to me that its happening. The fashion at the moment for the sky high heels with the concealed platform in the front, peoples feet are just sliding down into the front - nasty crushed toes can result.

I had this problem with a pair of Miss Selfridge platform wedges. They fitted nicely in the shop but when I wore them for the first time, I had to pad them out with insoles, gel soles and heel grips. Even then, I do tend to slip out of them.

I bet if I'd bought the size smaller they'd crush my feet

Now I also understand the term "suffering for fashion." Ouch.

What kind of insoles did you use? I bought a couple of pairs of Irregular Choice shoes online and they're half a size too big. Heel grips alone aren't cutting it.

Another thing is that general advice is to buy shoes in the latter half of the day when your feet are at their biggest, they seem to swell during the day.

I did this once, and spent several days with shoes that clip clopped after me.

Now I just buy when I'm around which is usually morning or later in the evening.

I never wear shoes with the toes showing apart from one pair of flip flops though

I've loads of very high heels and they all fit fine.

To be honest I really don't know, I just found them in a drawer! I do know I bought them in Paul Byrons though and they're those cut to size insoles. Sorry I can't remember more than that!

Get latex ones if you can. They're cheap but quite thick. You can trim them to fit too which is handy. I'd nearly recommend buying the insoles a size bigger than the shoe and then trim if necessary.

People wearing shoes too big for them is a MAJOR bug bear of mine. I'm not entirely sure why but it drives me bonkers when I see it. I work in a shoe shop and had a customer once who was looking for a pair of peep toe shoes in a six, I told her we only had size 8s left, she wanted to try them on ( - two sizes bigger?!) so I brought them out, bigger sizes are generally wider too so these shoes were HUGE on her. Gaping at the sides, her feet slid out the peep toe and there was about an inch of space between her heel and the shoe... yet she insisted they fit her fine and that she'd 'be wearing tights anyway so they'll be tighter' so she went and bought them. WHY would you do that? Baffling.

Lea Michele, the actress from Glee, is a terror for this. Any pictures of her that I see her shoes are always massive.

Surely this can't be comfortable?! Your feet would be flip flopping out of them all day.

Sometimes these celebrities being photographed will have been dressed by a stylist and they may be just given a pair of shoes to wear for the night, regardless of whether they are the correct size or not.

I do think for a lot of women though it is just the foot slipping forward due to the height of the heel.

I find it hard to get shoes in a half size, so sometimes have to go up a little, as going down the half size is seriously uncomfortable! Wouldn't be that obvious though, if there was that much of a gap I'd just leave them be.

I'll admit I'm guilty of this with a pair of shoes I just bought. In my defence, they were on sale!:oWidth wise, they're fine, there's just a bit of a gap at the back.Heel grips and make up sponges seem to be doing the trick.I just need a way to stop the sponges moving around and I'm golden.

my problem is that I can't get shoes big enough :( Damn you giant man feet!!!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,396 ✭✭✭lindtee

I'd be between a 4 and a 5. In length I'd be more a 4 but because of my incredibly wide feet (think hobbit without the hair) I often need a 5 to fit me on the width. In wide fitting shoes I'd go for the size 4. My feet were always wide but seemed to get wider when I was pregnant with my boys:(:(

I have the same problem with a pair of Irregular Choice heels. I have a normal pair oul pair of insoles that you cut to size, then I got a pair if those assorted gel grippy things from Marks and Sparks and I use the heel grips from those and the long skinny ones on the sides of the shoes. Works very well for me! I also always have big thick plasters on my baby toes cos they rub terribly otherwise!

Excellent, shall pick up a pair of insoles so :)

I bought high heels in New Look on Friday. I'm between a 6 and a 7. The 6 fit well in length, but were too tight across the toes of one foot, the 7 were gaping at the back. I bought the 6 because I loved the shoes, so now I must try stretching out the front of them.

I swear they increased all shoes by half a size without telling us. I find it really hard over the last couple of years to get heels that fit perfectly.

I am approx a 7.5 - 8 so my main problem is getting shoes to actually fit, let alone have the luxury of there being another size up!

Pythia I am the same size as you - I find I need to buy shoes with ankle straps or shoe boots just to keep them on my feet. Its so crap!

    i'm a size 9-10 eur43 :( it is so frustrating shoe shopping
any shoes I see for larger feet are horrible.
It also pisses me off when shoe manufacturers change the sizing some size 9s are only smaller size 8s :(

There's a store in Dublin called Cinderella Shoes (I think) that specialise in doing larger sizes of pretty shoes. Might be worth looking them up.

I can fall victim to this. My problem is that I am a 6 1/2 generally and it can be very difficult to get half sizes.
I have many a night stumbled over because the shoes are flipping off when walking (before alcohol). Now I am careful what type of show that I wear. It's usually one with a strap or a nice boot to keep my feet snug.

I have really narrow feet, so I have the opposite problem with mules and some sandals/wedges - my feet slip through the bit over the arch and my toes end up hanging over the front of the shoe, making it look like they're too small for me when they're really not.

If anyone knows of anywhere that does narrow-fitting, size 7 shoes, I'd love to know!

Hmm I get the bit about the gap at the back being ridiculous but what's wrong with a little bit of sandal left beyond your toes? I think it looks much prettier than toes hanging over the edge, practically on the street.

I'm between a 4 and a 5 (though got litas recently and was a 6, well done to the sales girl for mentioning that they run a little small ). I've narrow enough feet so if the shoe is wide fitting I have to take a 4, if it's nice and narrow a 5 is great. Normally they're not narrow though so it's a toss up for me between toes a little squashed at the front or shoes coming off and tripping me up. Can't seem to win, always end up in pain the next day if I wear heels. Does anyone know any ways around the pain (foot stretches maybe??). It's not even rubbing that does it, just the awkward position of the foot.

I'm constantly seeing women wearing wedges which are falling off them as they walking around; not attractive at all!
