    Hi all,

Have to get a hip arthroscopy and must pick a consultant as nobody in Galway specialises in this.

just wondering any recommendations of a consultant (doesn't matter where really)?

And also any advice on pre-op exercises I can do?!!

    Thanks! :)

    http://www.sportssurgeryclinic.com/

Got a labral debridement and joint cleaning done here to cure a Femero Acetabral Impingement. Obviously not entirely the same thing, but you may require a similar repair. Back walking independantly within a day, back running in about 6 weeks. Dr Macarthy if i remember correctly. AFAIK he also consults publicly in Saint James Hospital in Dublin but you will need to be prepared to wait a long time

Expensive (as with all private establishments) so hopefully you have insurance cover. Top class facility

Place in Waterford also, http://www.hipandgroinclinic.ie - might be worth checking out

I had a knee arthroscopy done just last Tuesday with Mr Peter Keogh in the Hermitage. He also works from the Bon Secours. He's a consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in knee/hip replacement. This is the second knee I've had done to repair torn cartiladge/meniscus tear. He did my other one five years ago. Both were very successful. You'd never know I'd surgery only 6 days ago and I've had absolutley no pain! I'd highly recommend him.

Sorry, I've no advice on pre-op exercises.

    HTH :)

Would you be comfortable giving a ballpark figure? If not its cool.

Thanks a mill :) I had a tear in knee too years ago and went to Cork. Based in Galway now so Dublin would be handier!

The Hermitage Hospital is opposite Liffey Valley on the N4 Galway Road. His secretary's number is 01-6459586 and her name is Emma. She's very nice. You might need a referral letter from your GP though.

    Best of luck with it.

The procedure went really smooth for me. I found Dr Mccarthy to be very competent and helpful, although my initial diagnosis was quick and straight to the point. In my case the problem was discovered whilst investigating a muscular injury.

Recovery in my instance was quick, could have walked out of hospital and was crutch free in 4 to 5 days. Back on desk duties 2 weeks later. I woke in a lot of pain the night following the surgery but it was well managed by the hospital staff

Completed a half marathon 8 months later (im not a runner) with very minor discomfort in the joint after about 18k. Other than that its 30 months on, I'm almost 30, extremely active, train with moderate to heavy weights regularly, cycle a lot and I have had no reaction apart from wondering if I should get the other side done. Even the small scars are hard to find now.

Overall a very successful procedure for me, and in that case I can only wish you similar luck. If you have any specific questions fire away

Thanks very much for the information it's great to talk to someone with a similar understanding of the injury. For years i thought it was my groin and suffered a lot at work(carpenter), I'm hoping it makes a difference to me and stupidly i will probably keep playing a bit of GAA but mostly would just like to keep active as the years pass on, i can't think of anything at the minute but if i do i might chat you.

    Cheers again

    Hi all,
I am due to have a hip arthroscopy with Tom McCarthy also and I am glad to hear that FarmerH had success with him (did you have the other hip done?). It was 2011 when you posted. Are you still happy with the results of the operation? I am new to this and would like to hear from people who have had experience with Dr McCarthy, or maybe other surgeons that they would recommend.

I have a tear on both sides. For the past 6 months I have been building up the posterior chain muscles. My worry is that it will tear again after the operation, if my gait is effectively the same. I won't be running like I use to but I'm still nervous that another tear will happen.

    Thank you!

hi all, i had a hip arthroscopy in the S.S.C in dublin in june for a labral tear + cam impingment.I am a 32 yr old male, i was in a good bit of dis comfort even when not excercising. was told by surgeon that sucess rate was 75% in patients but that he expected me to make a full recovery + would be able to return to sports. after the op he told me everything went great. unfortunately it wasnt, had worse pain in my groin + a piercing pain out through my posterior that i never had. NO sports since not even light jogging. After going for numerous post op consultations + been told itll prob get better with time, he finally told me oh theres nothing we can do your hip is starting to wear out.
My advice to anyone is don't take the first opinion your given, MAKE SURE you get a second opinion before preceeding with surgery so you know whats ahead. The actual success rate figures for ireland is 55-60% thats why theres so few surgeons doing it.
I know it is a very good procedure when done successfully, but thats just my story.
    Choose your surgeon carefully.
