got the RF treatment on Thursday.

relatively painless process, and SOME relief, but by no means fixed.

    ah well!

relatively painful, dunno what you had, i had eight of them on each side of the lower back last march, painfull as in excruciating, is my description, i then had another round in september, five on either side of my lower back, the same sense of enjoyment, some time later i was given an appointment to meet the pain guy and his crew, i was told to go haome and live away the best i could, also i would recieve a home care package within a short time, some 10 weeks later i have heard nothing, i have asked my gp, to be told that i would never recieve it due to cutbacks, bastads.

    not good....

    I had 2 each side.

lots of local and the worst discomfort was one needle going in felt like I was being nipped. mentioned that "I could feel that" and the consultant stopped and put in more local.

kept asking if there was anything I didn't like, and to let him know.

    I said Brussel sprouts!

mu first time was by a trainee with the consultant advising how to insert the needle, saying what angle to use, how to move the needle around, i had some one lying across my calfs and a nurse holding both wrists clamped one on top of the other, no questions about the anesthetic only breath in thro the nose and out the mouth, not nice, plus it was rather painful as in excrutiating, the second time was better as the consultant done the job himself.

Hi, I have been advised to get these injections by my specialist but my health insurance does not cover them as only took it out this year. Just wondering if anyone here has paid to get these done and if so would you mind telling me how much you had to pay (PM me if you prefer).

    Thanks.

While i was on the waiting list to be done, i was desperate and decided to ask how much the jabs cost.
about a grand a pop is what the secretary told me, the most of the money is the cost of the hospital bed for half the day as a private patient.

I thought you wouldn't be able to tell the proper effects for 2 weeks?

which ones? the nerve block injections - the title of this thread or the RF ones that other people there are talking about?

if you are talking about the nerve block injections its nowhere near a grand. i'm a private patient and i had them done. but if you are talking about RF i don't know - you would have to ring up the hospital and ask or ask your consultant.

edit - the nerve block injections are free if you are using public equipment even though you are a private patient. you don't take up a bed as you go home straight after :) it depend of course if the private hospital you are attending dosen't have the equipment. some are just really consultation rooms and xray and dressing clinics etc. so then by default you have no choice but to use public facilities and hence don't get charged.

Yes, it is for the nerve blocks. It was originally just my lower back that needed them but recently my neck has also got very bad due to disk problems. I was told around €600 per injection (which I thought was really expensive) but i imagine I would need separate ones for my neck and my back and would probably need a series of them which would cost a fortune. I've asked to go on the public list but know that I will be waiting a very long time to be called.

Yep, thats probably why i was quoted a grand, coz i need them in the lower back and sacro illiac joint.
You need to get your gp to keep sending letters for referal, they are not cruel and will see you as soon as you can.
I was lucky and was seen in about 4 weeks once they actually found my referal! best of luck with it :)

I had this a month ago.

the procedure was not a problem.

the most pain felt like being nipped by a six year old.

I said I could fee it and they stopped everything and gave me more local.

the actual RF was a very light pulsing. no PAIN at all.

afterwards, during the night I could feel that SOMETHING had been going on on my back, but minimal pain, just a little discomfort.

now, sadly it didn't help anywhere near as much as the anesthetic injections, but the procedure was a walk in the park

Best of luck. I do hope this works for you or at least helps you a bit. Would love to hear some positive stories here of these working because I know it dosen't work for a lot of people but it does work for some.

They used the same RF method to clear out the inside of one of my discs.
The epidural helped and had local at the entry site. They used fluroscopy to see where they need to put it and it was relatively painless.
Kept asking me every few seconds how I was. Procedure was done at 10am and I was allowed go home at 8pm I think it was.
Wheelchair to the car, got a lift home and 2 days in bed...downstairs. Was told not to climb stairs for 2 days for some reason.
Had it done in cappagh btw. Good luck!!

i thought it took up to 6 weeks to find out whether it was successful?

Anyway i got mine done on thursday and it was far from painless. it was agony, but the doc said that was because i'm short and the SI joint was difficult to get at from the angle the needed.
I'm black and blue and can't sit down, and i've got a dead leg. But not as bad as i was expecting. I've suffered much worse post nerve block.
