    Honestly looking at this and all the other interesting talk aside, it's most likely due to the fact that the 3 gang sockets are very expensive because 2 gang sockets are a commodity item with many alternatives out there.

    They're also not exactly what I'd call 'aesthetically pleasing' either.

    You've more choice with doubles, including different finishes should you wish to change them in the future.
