I have a fairly extensive collection of rock with emphasis on hippy rock so to speak and I'm just looking for suggestions on broadening my knowledge/collection.

If you have suggestions on bands that might not be mainstream or hidden gems please post them here so I can check them out.

Here are some examples of collections i have amassed over the years (some single albums, some discographies), including:

    AC/DC
    Aerosmith
    Alice Cooper
    Black Sabbath
    Bob Dylan
    Bon Jovi
    Bruce Springsteen
    The Byrds
    Chicago
    Chuck Berry
    Creedence Clearwater Revival
    Crosby, Stills & Nash

    Dire Straits
    The Doors
    The Eagles
    Eric Clapton
    Fleetwood Mac
    Grateful Dead
    Guns n' Roses
    Iron Maiden
    Jeff Buckley
    Jefferson Airplane
    Jimi Hendrix
    Journey
    Kiss
Korn (Is this classic rock yet???)
    Leonard Cohen
    Metallica
    The Monkees
    The Moody Blues
    Motorhead
    Neil Young
    Nirvana
    Phish
    The Police
    Queen

    Right,

Traffic, yes, That is definitely to my liking, I'll be taking them further

Blodwyn Pig, I'll have to do a bit more listening to these guys and get a better feel, they seem to cover a few different styles.

Jethro Tull, again definitely yes but where to start!!!! can you narrow it down to a few albums, their best in your opinion, they have a recent greatest hits, maybe a good place to start?
PS I love their description on Wikipedia :D
Their music is characterised by the vocals, acoustic guitar, and flute playing of Ian Anderson

Mott the Hoople, again yes, I'll be looking into them.

Free, well I'm surprised I have none of their albums tbh!

The founder of Blodwyn Pig, Mick Abrahams, played only on the very first 'Tull album. AFAIK, he is still playing today. Yes, they do cover different styles. They were a seminal band in as far as the gradual change over from blues/jazz to rock. They were experimenting with different styles. I think they originally released only two albums.

You are correct in that 'Tull have a very large output of albums. To be honost, my interest in them waned after their fifth or so album. My favourites are :

"This Was.." : Their first album with the above Mick Abrahams on guitar. Very much blues/jazz influenced, but you can hear the seeds of rock there too.

"Stand Up" : Their second album, minus Abrahams ( Martin Barre took over and became a permanent member) is a different sounding one from their first. Yes, there is blues here, as there is a unique kind of acoustic type songs ( ala the track "We used to Know"). Great album IMO.

"Benefit" : Takes over from where "Stand Up" left off.

"Aqualung" and "War Child" are two other favourites of mine. After that, their music lost some of it's appeal for me. This is not to say they are not good albums. Perhaps others might give opinions on these.

BTW, two other great bands springs to mind......."Steppenwolf". Check them out. Almost everyone knows "Born to be Wild".

The other is "Ten Years After".

I'll start checking out sites that recommend their Top 10 songs etc and take it from there, I know most will recommend what they believe others want them to recommend as apposed to what they like themselves but it's a starting point.

Being a bit of a Zepp fan I'd find it difficult to direct you to a specific album to get more of a 'feel' for their music than just a sampler such as Mothership. I'd very tempted to just tell to start with 'Led Zeppelin' and work your way chronologically up to 'Coda'. But if you'd rather get a broad taste of Zepp in just a few albums, I'd suggest listening in this order.

    1. Led Zeppelin
    2. Led Zeppelin III
    3. The Untitled album
    4. Houses Of The Holy
    5. Physical Graffiti
    6. (And I know this will be unpopular) The Soundtrack From The Song Remains The Same.

Most fans berate the live album, Jimmy Page apparently cringes when he hears it, but I can't help but like it.

Another band to add to your list would be Marillion.

I'm quiet lucky to have an friend mad into them so have free access to their albums to listen over and decide on which ones to get for myself

ZZ Top are essential. If this song doesn't send a shiver down your spine, there's something wrong with you.

I'd recommend having a look at The Answer, a northern Irish band I really like. They sound sort of like a cross between Led Zeppelin and Guns'n'Roses. Class act.

    Master of the Universe

Try Badlands. Short lived band, their first self titled album is amazing.

    Another underrated one, Kingdom Come

Both above singers have been slated a bit for 'copying' Robert Plant. But then again, so did David Coverdale...!

Another one worth checking out, Blackfoot. Better southern rock band than Lynrd Skynrd if you ask me

    try:

    The Black Crowes
    Airbourne
    The Quireboys

Some earlier bands that may have passed you by,

Hawkwind...In Search of Space, Doremi or IMHO one of the best live albums I have heard Space Ritual. ( Saw that tour in 1971 ) All the albums released in the very early 70s

Groundhogs....Spilt, which i think was recorded in 69/70. McPhee is an incredible guitarist.

Gong......Any of their TeaPot albums.Very hippy and a little strange.

Thanks to the poster for the Steve Hillage link.

Gotta get yourself Argus by Wishbone Ash....no collection is complete without it!

I would suggest RUSH - The Spirit of Radio.
Other bands which you could include to your repertoire are Alcatrazz and UFO.

Listen to the Mott the Hoople album, Mad Shadows. its sublime.

Others well worth checking out are the Groundhogs, Alice Cooper (especially the early albums), Montrose, Grand funk railroad, Whilst Slade's live album, Alive!, is just a joy to listen to.

If you like Ziggy era Bowie, you'd probably love the Bebop deluxe album Axe Victim too.

For late sixties psych check out Quicksilver Messenger Service first album
