One thing I noticed from the update, I launched both Project Cars and Dirt Rally in SteamVR and they're now showing up in my Oculus Library. I tried launching Dirt Rally from the Oculus Library later but it didn't work, not sure if I need to have Steam running in the background or something? It'll be handy once it works properly though as I've found SteamVR a bit awkward so far.

Far as i've read you need to have steam vr open first.

It's incredible, so bloody polished & accessible. I need more time with teleportation movement though, it's like learning how to play games again for an oldie like me :o I tried the joystick movement in the Doom 3 BFG Mod, & it's just not right...teleportation gets around it nicely

Get The Lab on Steam too, & give Xortex a go in it....incredible.

I've been trying out VTOL VR which is in early access on Steam. Being developed from the ground up for VR so along with functional switches and mfd's it includes a virtual stick and collective all manipulated using the controllers. An interesting take on the sim genre removing the need for any other peripherals. Graphically it's quite plain at the moment but the immersion factor is there so I'm intrigued to see how it develops.

Flyinside are apparently making their own sim from the ground up too using fsx aircraft, will have that sort of functionality as well. Out later this year apparently.

I haven't had any VR sickness but one thing I did find after playing and flicking virtual switches for a while is that when Im finished playing, my brain isn't convinced that the real items in front of my eyes are actually real! Hard to explain but a very strange sensation. I'm looking at my phone and my brains is wondering if it's actually there :D

Yeah, its fantastic, showed a load of VR stuff to the brothers kids and it was their favorite, followed by Superhot.
For me Lone Echo is even better, simply because it has a story and the movement is brilliant, didn't get a chance to show it to others yet though, and have a War wound from the single player last night lol

Arizona Sunshine seems to be very popular on Steam. I saw it during the Giantbomb VR Rodeo thing, and it looked really poor quality.

30 mins in Subnautica should remedy that for you. I don't get queasy that easy, but for whatever reason, perhaps the frame rate wasn't a constant 90, but I started getting "the sweats" a while into it. Shame, as I was enjoying it actually.

Lads/ladies we're proposing creating a new VR forum for PSVR / Oculus / Vive and *spit* Gear VR*

I originally requested a PSVR forum but seeing as the community is so small perhaps we can band together (although I originally poo-pooed the idea as about 70% of the thread discussions cannot be shared across platforms.. so I suggested separate forums for PC-VR and PSVR)

I'm a PSVR adoptee but will be going PC for next gen (when I'll be due a PC upgrade anyway) in a few years, so I guess it works out that we share the same forum. Initially at least.

Think about it... instead of a single superthread you could have actual topics and discussions about individual aspects of specific games. A Superhot thread can be shared amongst all users.

Anyway have your say at: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057772102

VR has made me love gaming again... let's make it a legitimate thing by having a dedicated forum for it.

*I may be kidding about that last one

I spent a good day getting my steam games working so I haven't even tried some of the oculus stuff yet! And then I found flyinside which has totally consumed me. Need more time!

Mind=blown. This is amazing. I had tried PSVR before but this is way beyond, though tbh there is a more obvious screen door effect on rift than PSVR from memory, I guess because the graphics are more realistic rather than the cartoony style i tried on PSVR.

Echo arena is amazing. and i happened to bump into a guy from Galway there during my brief visit. I didn't play a game because i want to figure out how to properly throw the disc first, throwing it vertically rather than frisbee style seemed to be a bit easier. I am glad the touch controllers come with straps because otherwise my controllers would be smashing into the wall or worse yet the monitor when i "release" my grip to throw. tutorials are a bit weird - teaching you how to thrust before they teach you how to brake :P.

Edit : Until Echo arena I didn't even realise than the rift had a built in mike or that I was broadcasting - is there any way to tell when you are broadcasting or to mute the mike?

ISS mission made me feel sick. I also nearly fell over during it.

As did War Thunder (though that wasn't as bad.) I usually log into that via steam so cannot start it from oculus home - does anyone know a way to set up a password for my account?

Elite dangerous was amazing. The 3D holograms on the instrument panel were amazing, so different from seeing them in flat screen. I was scooping fuel and smoke started rising from my cockpit, the 3d effect of the smoke was also crazy.

I tried a bit of the lab as well, and started blocks but got called away before i could really do anything. I had built up a bit of a library in steam + the 6 new games so i only sampled the various games, did not stay in them very long.

Echo arena I expect will be my favorite. Robo Recall also looks great but I wonder if that will get boring after a fairly short while, when novelty value wears off.

For anyone who has some similar issues to me - there is a centre view key in most games which will reset your view to where your head should be, useful for games where you are sitting in a chair and the rift thinks your head should be at your normal head height.

I also found running Steam games from SteamVR rather than from oculus home was better.

I got a bit tired / eye strain from playing for a few hours yesterday evening. I decided to go to bed rather than keep playing in case i felt a bit sick. I had really weird and vivid dreams. Normally I can't remember any dreams after I wake up.

    TLDR:

Echo Arena > Elite Dangerous > Robo Recall > the rest. Mind blowing stuff.

So amazing to see a nice discussion about positives now that all the vive is better, no rift is better stuff has died down. I genuinely look forward to seeing new posts in this thread! I've had a rift for a while, but not had space for the touch controlers bar a few days in the kitchen with my rig. I'm in the process of sorting that today!

Wasn't a fan of the ISS one, nearly fell over myself using it...it's a major "does not compute" moment for the brain

    +1

I thought Adrift was bad but ISS is worse.

Did you go into the iPad menu and enable two handed locomotion? You can twist and rotate the world by grabbing with both hands instead of using the sticks. The physical act of grabbing and rotating the world helps me not to get VR sickness from this. I never use the thumbsticks for locomotion in Mission ISS

Right, quick first impressions so i can go back and play. Tried Robo Recall, Elite Dangerous and Mission: ISS so far (plus Bigscreen). When it's good, it's beyond amazing. Robo Recall looks stunning, and i don't know if i'll ever get bored of catching bullets and throwing them back at robots, or pulling their arms off and beating them to death with them :P Elite is fantastic, but i need to remember how to play. I don't have a HOTAS yet (just a flightstick), so i should get one of those. ISS didn't really get much of a chance, as i got a brief moment of motion sickness and stopped. I'll go back though.

The setup was pretty easy, and haven't had any major issues. The right touch pad was stuck vibrating constantly, but a restart fixed that. The intro with the Wall-E style robot was brilliant as well. Really impressed with the tech behind it, and so far the resolution isn't a problem. Need to wait on Lone Echo, as i'm stupidly broke right now, but that's next. Dirt Rally is installing as well, and though i don't have a wheel, i'm looking forward to trying that.

Right, back to killing robots :P

Echo arena (the multiplayerd game which is a companion to the lone echo single player game) is free on the oculus store - for a limited time. And is excellent.

also +1 on the robot intro being brilliant, in fact when i get my wife to try it later on that is probably what i will boot up, assuming I can find it easily in my library.

Is VirtualDesktop any better than Bigscreen?

Tried Summer of Bullets there, fantastic fun. It's the longest I've spent in VR...had to come out of it because my arms are getting tired reloading the guns!

They're both Virtual Desktop and Virtual Cinema apps but there are some important differences and some subjective differences.

Virtual Desktop is €14 IIRC and BigScreen is Free
Virtual Desktop can play 3D 360º Videos but BigScreen Can't
Big Screens Virtual Cinema's are much better as is its Touch Control
Virtual Desktop is better for single player 2D monitor games on a virtual screen because it has less performance overhead being single player. Games might have framerate issues in BigScreen but the reason is higher overhead from Multiplayer with screen sharing. ie Pay with up to 3 friends sharing the same virtual space. You can see their screen, they can see yours. Some say text legibility is better on Virtual desktop.

I have both. I only use Virtual Desktop for 3D 180º VR Porn now :o:D

I prefer virtual desktop to bigscreen on the vive, I'm not sure if theres a lofgical reason for it because I haven't fired up bigscreen in ages.

From what I remember they're quite different feature wise

3d videos in the cinema environment in virtual desktop are pretty neat

Rift arrived yesterday,2 days early from amazon.

Couldnt wait till my next day off work so banged in the new USB hub and set up the rift. Wow,its a little unnerving how it really does feel like you have been teleported to another space. Quite surreal:eek:

Play area is quite small so i was a little nervous about hitting anything or falling over but the guardian system works well enough but i could see myself getting carried away and ending up in a heap on the floor:D

Everything feels accurate tracking wise which is really cool as i was unsure how that would work.

One issue ive had is audio dropping on the left headphone, seems to be a issue with the connection inside the unit,at least that how it sounds as it will come in and out as i move. I used the supplied screwdriver and removed and re attached the headphone and its working since so fingers crossed it stays that way. Going with amazon is hopeful;ly gonna make it less of an issue if it does turn out to be faulty.

All in all a very impressive first impression:)

Knocked a ceiling light down and slapped a wall while playing Robo Recall last night. So yeah, i can see people getting carried away :P

at one point I stopped replacing bulbs

Then I stopped playing games that make you wave your hands above your head because they're inevitably ****e :D

The latter was the better decision

Actually the only game I'm playing right now is Pavlov

I need to work on my VR instincts. Yesterday evening I managed to:
    • Fall over when playing echo arena, in the tutorial part where you are dragging yourself along using blocks/walls
    • smack my touch controller off the table in front of me when trying to bounce a ball.
    • try to put my touch controller down on a virtual table in front of me to free my hands up to tale the headset off.

I hadn't had a beer or anything but it made me realise that I better not "drink and rift" in the future either. I guess those three things are a testament to the sense of presence in the rift though.

I also tried out the oculus cinema. Tbh I am unlikely to use that app reallly - the resolution loss in the film is not worth the added atmosphere of sitting on the moon watching the cinema screen. If resolution improved to 4k it would be different but for the time being the novelty value is just not enough to outweight the graininess of the picture. It is not unwatchable by any means but I would rather watch the films on my screen or TV than in the rift. Though the headset did do a great job of the sound.

I downloaded "oculus first contact" to my library which i think is a great app to introduce VR to my wife and kids.

Has anyone played The Red Stare yet?

You're basically a Secret Agent in the 50s spying from a window on an apartment complex, looking for a commie spy.

Played it for an hour last night, found it quite fun, figuring out who the commie informants / spies are, chain smoking, throwing random items out the windows, all that good spy stuff.

    Its free too !
