Recommend the replacement faceplate from VR cover. The PU leather on it is so much better than the sh*tty foam on the original. More comfortable, I don't sweat and therefore My oculus doesn't steam up as much . Pricey though!

Anyone else find that their rift interferes with other USB game controllers?

With my rift and sensors plugged in, my Xbox controller only shows up as a generic Bluetooth controller using my Bluetooth dongle. Without the Rift and sensors it's shows up as an Xbox controller. Using USB it shows up properly but it takes ages to the open the game controller configuration panel in Windows, and when it does its very unresponsive. I've had the same thing happen with my steering wheel in windows and in Assetto Corsa when trying to configure it, the game freezes when I go to the controllers menu. None of this happens with my rift and sensors unplugged.

    Strange and annoying.

If I was to buy a laptop that was powerful enough for an Oculus Rift at a good framerate, what sort of spec would I be looking for and are there any models out there (Dell etc) that you recommend?

I think a laptop + rift is a great idea as you can then bring VR with you when going away, or move it around the house to locations with more space when needed.

I went with this and it works perfectly with VR https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/saved-configurations/proteusIV-15/7JkTYwBsa3/

I didn't get Windows with it because I already had a key, and I'll be bumping it up to 16 GB of RAM pretty soon.

Nice! Good framerate or should I go for higher spec?

Can budget up to €1,500 so I'd toss in the extra RAM if/when I decided to go for it.

I take it the Oculus + accessories is all pretty portable for bringing on flights etc?

The framerate on the Rift is perfect yeah. If you want to throw some more money at it you could look at one of the other ones on that site with a better GPU to futureproof it.

No, you can't use the Rift on a flight, or any public transport really. There are 2 sensors that you need to set up that need a good bit of room. I'd also imagine that any movement of the sensors will throw off the tracking completely.

sorry I meant, is it easy enough to *transport* on a flight not use on a flight ;)

Oh right yeah. It's grand, comes in a relatively small box. It would fit in hand luggage if you wanted it to.

Did they set an end date for the discount? (sorry thread is TLDR)

I got x4 of these, for the back of my case - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00C7S2FRE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (the four of them sit nicely now with all cables hidden, meaning I can connect the Rift without having to move anything)

Also got one of these too - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B013ICN59Y/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Had seen them recommended on Youtube, & they're working flawlessly

Can confirm, got 3x USB extenders @ 3 Meter each, working perfectly with 3 Meter Amazon Basic HDMI cable

    Thanks again Inviere

Just a word of caution for those wearing glasses with the rift. Take care that the lenses of the glasses don't brush/touch against those of the headset as it will scuff them. The rift lenses do not have an anti-scratch coating for some inexplicable reason and are prone to be scratched/marked easily. I've noticed a small scuff mark on mine that can only have been caused by my glasses which is frustrating as I've been very careful overall and wear a spare pair that are quite narrow and fit closer to my face than my regular pair. While It's not affecting the visuals in general it can be seen if i look for it.

Deeper facial interfaces/padding options are available for the bespectacled and third party lens protectors (e.g. for watch faces) are also an option. I've some lens protectors on order and I'll update here on how well they fit/work out.

sorry just on this point, does anyone know if the Rift discount is just for summer (i.e. end of August) or do I have a few months before I decide to get one?

Played Echo Arena last night, and it was great fun. Felt great just floating around, grabbing onto stuff. Looking forward to trying Lone Echo over the weekend.

Lucky I checked so ... so just to be clear this is the deal right?

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Oculus-Rift-and-Touch-Bundle/dp/B073X8N1YW/

It says you get 6 free games, but I read elsewhere that you get 7. Was that a different deal??

Also does this work well in room-scale?

I have a PSVR at the moment and pretty much play room-scale content only.

It would be far far superior to PSVR in that regard I'd imagine. I didn't think PSVR did room scale at all.

I think a seventh game gets added automatically in oculus home but I could be wrong

although you need 3 sensors for true room-scale afaik.

I looked it up and apparently there was a deal for £399 that had 7 games plus an Xbox controller which would have been a nice little extra as I could have sold it off in Cex for €24 or whatever.

Still this version has a better box for transporting it around with a laptop to have VR on-the-go, so I guess this deal works out better.

Yeah PSVR does 360 pretty well, as in you can aim behind you in Brookhaven and it works surprisingly well. But obviously the 270 degree plane is where it excels.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,839 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

Actually it seems the new one being offered for £399 has a different number of sensors to the previous offer for £399 available last month (with Xbox controller and one large sensor).. I take it the 2 sensors improve tracking?

I think if you get it from Oculus directly you still get the 7th game. At least they say on the site that you do. I had no interest in the 7th though, some card game.

right cheers, not sure if Amazon is free delivery.. but I might qualify for their free gift vouchers when you top up by £100 as posted in Bargain Alerts currently.

    So I guess I'm getting a rift...

Now to ...eh... buy a laptop ... ffs expensive month ;)

EDIT: Checked and it is free delivery to Ireland from Amazon but they've added their damned extra VAT onto it, so it's cheaper to get it sent to Parcel Wizard. Also got a nice free £9 from Amazon after buying £55 gift vouchers so every little helps!

Much difference between "i7 7700HQ 2.8 Ghz" and "i5 7300HQ 2.5 GHz" when it comes to the Oculus?

Both have the "GTX 1060 6GB", and the i5 one has DDR5 RAM if that matters.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

The i7 is a lot faster in general and would be far more beneficial in some games, would be a better longer term investment than the i5, though either should be pretty OK for VR (both can turbo boost to much higher clocks if needed). The GDDR5 refers to graphics memory on the video card, not the system memory which would be DDR4 for both.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,839 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

Right. Longterm investment is what I'm looking for as I'm going the non-upgradeable laptop route.

So I guess a 1070 GTX instead of 1060 and i7, plus 16GB RAM should see me through next 3-4 years?

Not worried about ultra high clarity, just want to still be able to play latest at relatively decent framerate in 3-4 years from now.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Yes, it will still be able to run most games at high/ultra settings over the next few years at 1080p. At the moment it's well able to push 1440p ultra in the vast majority of titles.

Thanks, and keeping the laptop cooled externally ensures the GPU doesnt degrade over time and extends the life of the graphics card, or is it not really a requirement?

Ive never had a system that needed cooling before so no idea.

  • Registered Users Posts: 214 ✭✭saneman

You talking about a laptop cooling pad? Not familiar with gaming on a laptop but given the importance of cooling in general I figure it can only be beneficial. From a cursory search they seem relatively cheap, certainly after the investment in a rift & laptop.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,839 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

I was just wondering what the purpose of cooling was. Does it extend the life of the machine or GPU, or does the machine just have a failsafe to cut off itself regardless so cooling only acts to prevent the need for the failsafe.

I.e. does cooling prevent actual damage to the laptop, or is there no risk of damage?

I'm thinking this because I know the 1070 runs a little hotter than the 1060 so might need extra hardware to protect it.

    Sorry bit off topic...

Pulled the trigger finally, ordered from Amazon with extra cables and USB card. Now we wait.........have never been so excited for a new gadget in a long long time. :)

Cooling helps the processor, graphics card, & power supply operate within their optimal temperature range. Under load these heat up putting stress on their component parts - inadequate cooling will shorten their lifespan.

How many USB 3 ports do I need to ensure the laptop has?

3 for room scale is it?

    e.g. this laptop has

    - 1 x USB 2.0
    - 2 x USB 3.0
    - 1 x USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-C

probably not enough for headset, 3 sensors and touch?
