I was just wondering what the purpose of cooling was. Does it extend the life of the machine or GPU, or does the machine just have a failsafe to cut off itself regardless so cooling only acts to prevent the need for the failsafe.

I.e. does cooling prevent actual damage to the laptop, or is there no risk of damage?

I'm thinking this because I know the 1070 runs a little hotter than the 1060 so might need extra hardware to protect it.

    Sorry bit off topic...

GPUs and CPUs will run slower with inadequate cooling, other components like power delivery can outright fail but they can run a lot hotter than the main CPU/GPU generally.

How many USB 3 ports do I need to ensure the laptop has?

3 for room scale is it?

    e.g. this laptop has

    - 1 x USB 2.0
    - 2 x USB 3.0
    - 1 x USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-C

probably not enough for headset, 3 sensors and touch?

I've had to try and split my stuff up between different usb controllers in my machine as they were causing issues with other USB stuff when all on the same one. I've my headset in the 3.1, one sensor in USB 3 and one in USB 2. If I'm getting a third sensor I reckon I'll have to get a USB card even though I have spare ports free.

I take it any old "3.1 Type C" to "USB 3" connector will work for using the 3.1, like this one ?

Right. Longterm investment is what I'm looking for as I'm going the non-upgradeable laptop route.

So I guess a 1070 GTX instead of 1060 and i7, plus 16GB RAM should see me through next 3-4 years?

Not worried about ultra high clarity, just want to still be able to play latest at relatively decent framerate in 3-4 years from now.
Are you sure your laptop isnt upgradeable with that much muscle? Mines as easy to do as a desktop, it is 17 inch though.

I haven't decided on the laptop yet so not sure if the branded ones are upgradeable. I think the Clevo ones are though...

    So far contenders are:

    - MSI 15.6" GT62VR 7RE Dominator Pro
    - ASUS GL502VS ROG Strix
    - Or a custom Clevo jobbie on pcspecialist

They're all around the same price give or take £50 (not cheap mind), the Clevo custom one on pcspecialist might be about £100 cheaper but screens and trackpads aren't supposed to be great.

Anyway it'll probably come down to a coin-toss on the MSI/Asus... I think the MSI might have it since it has a special "cooling" button operation just in case you need it, plus IPS for the screen.

I got mine from this crowd about 2 years ago now and its still an absolute beast, wasnt much more expensive than a desktop build either. The screen is amazing and so is the soundbar along the hinges, never gave a bit of trouble:

Some of them will require you to go with the mobile version of a card though.

Cool, well definitely let me know if there's a similar spec to the MSI for less than £1,700

Sod it, went for the MSI GT62VR 7RE ... early birthday present plus it's a thing of beauty

So got the Rift and the machine... do I need extension cables or something else?!?

PSVR is so much easier to setup ;)

No idea, my USB3.1 port on my PC isn't a type C

Did you get the touch controllers? Third sensor?

I got the deal with 2 sensors and touch controllers.

    So I have now...

    - Rift headset
    - 2 sensors
    - 2 Touch controllers
    - Gaming laptop

Is that all I need for 180 degree play initially, or are the packaged leads to the sensors too short?

(Remember that with the laptop I can position it anywhere so perhaps that's an advantage when it comes to the sensor position.)

I'll worry about 360 full room play later. Happy with 180 degree for now.

According to this video i can get 360 working fine if i setup the two sensors at a height either side of my playspace.

So i assume i dont really *need* the third sensor?

My only concern is the length of the sensor cable. How long is it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 214 ✭✭saneman

The cables for the sensors are 2.5m long. Btw after initial setup the sensors will need to be reconfigured in the settings any time they are moved.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,416 ✭✭✭.G.

I tried the 360 setup with two sensors but it was having none of it. Kept telling me my sensors were too far apart. Needed to be within 2m of each other which seems at odds with that video above, look way more than 2m apart. Indeed both cables are stretched back to his PC and both are 2.5m long so they must be around 5m apart. I was trying for one at the front facing me and one behind me facing the first one.

From reading around, the warnings don't really mean much. It's just a recommended distance but can be ignored when they pop up.

How long is the cable from the headset itself?
There are two cables out of the headset right (HDMI and USB) ?

Is it worth investing in some UGREEN extension cables for the 2 sensor setup (or for the headset cables)?

It wouldn't let me set up the sensors though, kept telling me to move them closer to each other so I couldn't get past the setup stage. I could have probably quit it and just played I suppose, probably would have worked.

Exact length I'm not sure but for 180 play I find its plenty long. Room scale you'd have to extend.

I bought some UGREEN with mixed results. 5m one didn't work, 2m one was fine and is still connected to one of my sensors.

Are there any lmitations using my Xbox 360 controller (with wireless usb dongle) instead of an Xbone controller, or same deal?

Ignoring idiots who comment "far right" because they don't even know what it means

Oculus Rift Purchased from Amazon on Saturday, expected delivery next Monday
Star Trek Bridge Crew purchased from Steam on Monday for €49.99 to get pre-installed along with over 20 other free and some purchased games.
Star Trek Bridge Crew reduced to €24.99 last night, rage, haven't even played it and already it's reduced.
But wait, can I refund if it has just been reduced? Are the nice people at Steam really that nice?
Refund request to Steam at 10.06am this morning, reason given, this item is on sale at a reduced price.
Refund approved from Steam at 10.24am this morning, showing as pending and will be available to use in my steam wallet within 7 days.
Will re-buy once funds are available and now have another €24.99 to spend!

First time to use the refund option and very happy with the Steam support! So happy I didn't purchase in the Oculus store!

tl;dr sometimes things work out good in the end.................

I canceled a controller through steam last month while it was on sale. No problems, got a full refund the next day.

Not sure about getting a refund on items that go on sale, but it is only 2 days later since you bought it so I say, send a request for partial refund or something.

    No harm in trying :)

    Oculus arrived today.

It's one of the new sets with the new style of padding etc as detailed here: https://www.roadtovr.com/closeup-with-new-cheaper-oculus-rift-touch-bundle-ships-with-improved-foam-padding/

    https://roadtovrlive-5ea0.kxcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/oculus-rift-touch-bundle-2017-5.jpg

The headset is fairly wedged in there, is there some special way of removing it from the box like a screw holding it in place or something?

EDIT: actually this video seems to show the guy just lifting it out, I guess I just need to give it a solid tug ;)

Walked in to work to find a nice big box sitting on my desk today, and I had given up hope it I would have it for the weekend after Amazon stating it wouldn't be delivered until Monday, so there goes my weekend!!

Cables and USB card arrived yesterday and they are all setup and ready to go. Had an issue with the screens going blank every now and again but changing the power settings on the USB ports seems to have fixed it. Lots of games downloaded already during the week, so excited!

Now how can I get the rest of the day off work........... :)

Doesnt even matter if you understand what VR is conceptually (ie. Your not a luddite who thinks its just a little 3DTV strapped to your head), its still something you can barely understand till you try it yourself.

Like, I knew what to expect......and yet I didn't.....and was dumbfounded and could help but shout 'FCUK ME!!!' when the giant T-Rex ran up to me in the Dreamdeck experience.

I'm curious what my take on it will be after having 4 months of PSVR (Slim not Pro).

I'll miss my Aim Controller ... headshots never felt so rewarding.

Theres a flash sale on the Oculus store now until Monday: https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/6xg3w1/oculus_labor_day_flash_sale_now_live/

Any recommendations for a new owner? Was going to get Arizona Sunshine but that might be cheaper elsewhere.
