Yeah I saw that too but Valve did hint that they might release a tracking puck for tracking other objects.
That would be interesting and probably kill STEM.
I have an opportunity to try a Vive next weekend, I'm abroad atm so depends if I can convince work colleagues, definitely would love to try it.

If you cant make a PC communicate to a VR headset fast enough wirelessly,
Why not put the PC in the wireless headset!

AMD really brought the mountain to the King with this one! :pac:

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,143 ✭✭✭jumbobreakfast

looks cool, lack of positional tracking with the gearVR is that device's biggest problem but if Sulon can somehow do this without an external device then that's it, we'll never take the damn things off! :)

Is there some sort of neck muscle regime to go with it?

Apparently the GPU has about 20% of the Rift/Vive minimum spec's capability. It's somewhere between Gear VR and Console level of performance, but is going to cost a fortune. Nifty idea but I'm not sure what section of the market it is aiming for.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Yeah, it would have to run specially designed, non-graphically intensive games, that focus on novelty and gameplay rather than graphics. Integrated R7 graphics are nowhere near fast enough to drive any modern games at all, even on lowest settings, so many of the demo's that are popular even on DK2 would be a big no-no for this AMD headset and would any AAA title.

The only kinds of titles that would run would be Minecraft-esque games. Nothing wrong with those but it's going to be extremely limited in what it can run and who's going to make games for it? Not really sure what the play is here, I can't see it being successful.

It would be nowhere near console performance either to be fair. 8800P and R7 integrated can't even run games like Fallout4/Battlefront/COD at the lowest resolution and settings above 20-25fps.

Minecraft is surprisingly demanding actually! More on the CPU than GPU though I imagine.

It's an interesting idea. I would rather just get a headset for my phone or go all out on the rift but will be interested in seeing how it does.

    Well holy God: https://vimeo.com/158922156

Looks like the Sulon has some nifty tech.

That's pretty class. Simulating the feeling of goin g up and down will be cool too when that comes.

Maybe the video capture was bad but I think it looks really poor and gives a bad impression of VR/AR. It seemed to me to be really shaky and glitchy.

I wonder how Google's magic leap will compare?

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,371 ✭✭✭✭Zillah

You understand that it's AR, and in no way representative of VR? Of course it's a little shaky, it's actively tracking a real spatial environment in real time and mapping graphics on to it. It's by far the most impressive AR I've seen - I don't know you're expecting.

It's both AR and VR. The VR part (when you go above the room) looks shaky and glitchy too. If it's like that when it releases then it's not going to be very comfortable to use. Hopefully it's just the way they recorded it though.

True, Samsung are playing with with that atm and are demoing a device at GDC. It sounds a bit scary tbh, uses electrical pulses to screw with your motion sensors!:

I think oculus were working with it before but had to drop it. It's already used to help people who had a stroke or other balance problems with no ill effects.

I actually thought of this idea before, damn other people getting to my ideas first!

"Yeah mate you'll need a proper monster card for this VR lark, listen I've an AMD protoype in the back of the van, it's a fackin beast mate. Would set you back three large if you could find it in a shop, which you can't, but seems as how you're a fellow early adapter I'll let you have for 1 and a 'alf. Can't say any fairer than that mate"

haha yeah, some heavy early adopter tax being piled on but it is fairly similar to all new revolutionary tech. That card is aimed at VR developers so perhaps it's for devs who are working on AAA titles that take years to develop. But I'm sure once people with more money than sense start seeing the benchmarks they'll be daft enough to buy one

Playstation to deliver affordable VR at €399 Edit: plus the price of a PS4 Camera.

Surprised at how cheap it is. If the specs are even close to the Rift/Vive, they must be making a serious loss on each unit.

No mods, no porn = No interest.

Unless it gets PC drivers, of course.

They're not comparable. By their own admission it is a less technically impressive device.

Which is fine, and I think the price is good too. This will be the bread and butter of the market - it was never going to be very sustainable with just caviar.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 28,633 Mod ✭✭✭✭Shiminay

I think we're missing an obvious point about the AMD Sulon - on paper it's specs aren't magical, but they *are* good enough to process a stream of data from a properly powerful desktop that might send some proprietary code that the onboard hardware can successfully decode on the fly. That's how I'd do it anyway, but I'm only an eejit on the internet, I'm sure they've got a proper plan :)

The PlayStation VR puts it firmly in Christmas present money territory and so I suspect it'll sell well if it gets out in time for that. Console players are used to second rate graphical performance anyway, so I'll bet a lot of them simply won't notice or care (truth be told, graphics are the least important thing for me in games anyway, so neither do I), but the other side of that same coin is that without a minimum acceptable performance (frame rate mostly) from this, the VR experience breaks down. Tell you what though, it's made VR become a consumer product again at that price point.

Hmm, yes, that's a fair point. I think I was just so impressed by the AR aspect that I forgot the judge the VR.

If anyone would be able to produce it cheaper than everyone else it would be Sony. They don't need to get into bed with any other company because they've all the experience and production facilities in house already.

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,215 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

Everyone is saying it's cheaper than the vive/oculus. I had an Oculus for 12mts and I think I spent €10 on Zero Point, everything else was free or mods of games I had.
You'll need to lump up €70+ on a PlayStation game and you'll have either none or very little access to anything outside the PlayStation garden.
If you look at what you actually get access to the PlayStation is in the toy section where as the vive/oculus are nestled in amongst the 950ti's on the shop shelf.

Heres a demo of that multi-display and desktop display that was mentioned earlier in the thread...

    Ooops, link would be handy:
