I'm out west and it is, as they say, the best. Having lived in various locales in London town over the years, I have to say I do quite like the area. Close to the job and good selection of boozers, things to do.

Was accosted by a chap in Notting Hill the other night when he heard my accent. I was telling him about the economy and he said he'd not seen many Irish coming over in recent years. I said that he must be joking, I haven't heard this many Irish in London since the 80s! He did seem to think we were all builders and live in Kilburn, mind

I live in Angel. Have done for the past 10 years. Great for walking into the west end. Lived in Olympia for 3 years before that; Westbourne Park for 3 years before that and started out in Shepherds Bush for 5 years.

The irish of the 80s and 90s were predominantly in North and West London but the new fresh off the boats seem to be domnated in South and East London. Clapham seems to have loads of Irish these days. I shudder at the thought of it....nappy valley.

Nappy Valley (Northcote) is in Battersea not Clapham.

Battersea...Clapham....21 years in London and still view it all as one. Whenever I have had the misfortune to go to nappy valley, we've always gone to either Clapham Junction or Clapham South.

That's the thing though, the demographic of Nappy Valley and Clapham (Apart from the mile and a half distance) is very different. Clapham Junction is in Battersea, Clapham South is not.

I used to live there, don't anymore. Think I'd like to live in Angel next, more happening and less samey.

Nah, that’s Balham. Ain’t no nappies in sight on Clapham High Street on a Friday or Saturday night.

I don’t really get the whole Irish Clapham thing either. Sure, there are a few Irish accents about (and there’s the God-awful Swan in Stockwell), but no more so than any other part of London.

Bit silly – it’s a pretty big area. Clapham Junction being called Clapham Junction does seem to cause a lot of confusion, given that it’s about two miles from Clapham North/Common tube stations.

for peace of mind, lets not argue about clapham or battersea and just call it england.

Same here. I work in Notting Hill and it's not all that. Overpriced really. When I go home and tell people they get really excited. I blame the movie. Must say it to Richard Curtis next time i see him outside his house..

Bayswater - loads of restaurants, nice big park - best place I have lived in c10 years here (followed by Shad Thames, then Peckham). Running order was:

Leytonstone (.5 years) -> Peckham (3.5 years) -> St Johns Wood (1.5 years) -> London Bridge (1 year) -> Shad Thames (1.5 years) -> Tooting Bec (.5 years) -> Bayswater (1 year so far)

Is Bayswater not just full of Russian Hookers and Arabs as it certainly washen I lived up the road in Westbourne Park?

You sure have a mixed bag in there.

I live in Balham and have done for years and there are little to no Irish as far as I can see. Clapham common is full of Aussie's with a sprinkling of Irish. I think most come to socialise rather than live there though. I have noticed more Irish in Clapham Junction than anywhere else. To be honest Clapham/Balham has become too expensive for anybody moving over looking for work. To rent and buy in the area is now extortinate in comparison to other parts of London south of the river. There seems to be a fair few Irish still in Tooting, an increase in Streatham and Brixton and a few in West Norwood and Norbury. Most people I know that live in Balham/Clapham (in decent accomadation) are working in the city and earning lots of $$$. I have been looking to buy in the area and prices are unbelieveable.. nearly half a million for a 2 bed!

Sorry, I was referring to the "Nappy Valley" comment.

Yep, definitely. I'll probably moving further South-East in the summer - rents around here are going through the roof.

On Pembridge Road, when you come out of the station - it's opposite the Prince Albert pub. The staff can be a bit arsey on occasion but it's good for a browse.

Well I used to go out with a girl that lives up there, the rent is astronomical. Also the clientèle in pubs etc is so different to where I live. It's like a different country, I was up there for the first time in ages a couple of weeks ago.
It's lovely though :). I love the street food on Golborne Road, on Saturdays.

Excellent, I think I know where I'll be wandering the next time I've got a Saturday free :)

Yeah, it's a bit more pricey than charity shops (where I buy most of my books and the odd graphic novel - but then, it's a proper business).

Sat afternoon in the Prince Albert is grand for people watching, esp if you want to avoid everyone heading further down to the markets.

Not sure about the Russian hookers (will take your word for it :)) but it is an ethnic melting pot alright - Arabs, Oriental and the rest living in harmony :D Great place to live.

I'm living in Finsbury Park now and have never been happier. Only a few minutes away from town on the tube as well as access to National Rail and bus links everywhere. There are shed-loads of great pubs and restaurants around and I'm delighted with my flat.

    It's a great spot.

    Anyone else in the area?

Faltering Fullback just off Stroud Green Road is absolutely banging and does a lovely bit of Thai grub. It's owned by young enough lads from Limerick and is a simply beautiful pub with a smoking area that has won awards. It's always packed to the rafters with young Irish and is a grand place to watch a game. There's also the Old Dairy on the top of Stroud Green Road which does great food, a hopping quiz and is generally a grand spot for a drink. There's also a rake of restaurants about and a couple of old-school Irish pubs, the Park Tavern on Tollington Park Rd is one of the better ones.

I always like The Woodbine on Blackstock road. Also run by a couple of young Irish lads, and great Thai food. Was a bit of a trendy spot, though not been up that way in a couple of years.
