Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

poteen hangover question.....

can anyone confirm a story that is rattling around in my family?

my grandfather was a serious drinker and in the 40 arrived home after a night on poteen.

the next morning he was given a glass of water and this sent him over the edge again and he collapsed drunk on the kitchen floor.

Is there any truth that water on a poteen hangover makes you drunk again?

sounds fishy to me, but then I've never drunk "real" poteen

    Thanks!

there's only one way to find out.
get the spuds out and make some poteen!

Are you sure it was water?

Only way to cure a poitín hangover is to drink more poitín.

It's bullshít, like a lot of myths surrounding drink (e.g. mixing drinks makes you drunker).

Alcohol makes you drunk not water.

He wasn't sober the next morning, just close to death. Probably a good thing he got that water.

The reason you get drunk again the next morning when you drink water is that your body starts processing the left-over alcohol/ketones left in your system that it couldn't finish processing the night before due to being dehydrated.

He was just so drunk that he didn't realise he was drunk. The water just sobered him up enough to realise what the hell was going on!

    It does
Its not so much its a magic formulae its just so potent, it tastes and nearly is pure alcohol its on the border of a poison. Its not recommended I drank the real stuff twice and I can safely say never again.

It is believed that it kinda recycles the alcohol and gets it going into your system again, Basically making more drink, just at a lower volume

A friend of mine had this occur and he was sobering till he had his pint of water and seemed to just be drunk again, could have been in his head but it happened.

Same urban myth is perpetuated in my family:) Saying that though, it is possible to still feel the effects of alcohol the next moring - if you had enough to drink the night before that is:o

Its not 'on the border' haha, alcohol is a poison.
    Its well-past the border.

In fact its so far past the border that you can't see the border anymore, and you have gotten used to the better road.

^^^ Sounds legit so +1 for that.

Much better than what my answer was going to be about the Poitin Fairies following you home and living in your taps.

Actually it sounds like ill-informed pseudo science.

Poitin Fairies following you home and living in your taps would have more basis I think.

    It's true.
Years ago, 2 of us drank a bottle over a Fri evening. I was hardly able to stand afterwords and went to bed around 10pm on the fri. My buddy put an ashtray on my chest while I was sleeping and it was still there when I woke up late Sat night very thirsty. I felt sober so drank a pint of water. Within 10 mins, I was as drunk as the previous evening so went back to bed, and didn't wake again until around 8am Mon morning.
That was the first and last time I ever drank the stuff.

Like the last poster - had some water the next day and was worse than the night before. Not a weekend I want to repeat.
There is some techno sciencey stuff that explains all this but it's on the level.

1st and last time I tried the stuff. Although I had the best nights sleep ever...

Hence your username. I assume you don't drink alcohol.

Conversely a few glasses of wine the morning after drinking poitin will sober you up.

There's no proof for it but it's a scientific fact.
