    Interesting.

But it will have to play everything on Steam and that presents a problem which could mean them hindering PC game development. If Arma 3/Crysis 3/ that russian game in the tunnels that looks stunning 3 come out and are on steam the "steambox" will have to play them. So it will have to be a bit of a beast.

Unless its for the popcap style games and we have phones for them.

Sounds more like bad journalism by IGN. They might well be but it's far from confirmed, they are just extrapolating into sensationalism from a single job posting.

Valve have always had hardware guys on the payroll but an industrial designer seems new alright.

Wouldn't think too much of it anyway, unless they're building a small branded HTPC then I have no idea how it'd work. :o

I have seen this popping up in a few places. It could be that they're just making graphics cards or maybe they're going to manufacture gaming PCs.

I'd like to think that it's some kind of gaming machine that runs their own OS but is copatible with everything on Steam and features a simple form of upgradable hardware. Hopefully on a mouse and keyboard setup too.

Very true. A lot of people are also automatically assuming that this means they are developing a console - I would not take that as a certainty. I think there would be a greater chance of Valve developing gaming peripherals with greater integration into games rather than creating a console. They have already had contact with various hardware developers over the years where they have run hardware promotions over Steam so it would not be entirely out of the ordinary.

Which they can't really do given the need for DirectX support. :)

Indeed, it's just as likely that they're creating a range of peripherals to accompany their Big Picture mode as anything else really.

Agree with gizmo. It would be a peripherals mostly. I would not be surprised to see some sort of valve controller for pc.
Let's be honest, pc gamers won't run away from controller for all games. Dark souls would be a good example. Then any driving games or platform games.

Though I would like steam to focus more on software things. I really liked the involvement with Linux. If windows is such a huge threat for them, then why not expand in to Linux and make it gaming OS?
I play games mostly and that would be the only reason I am using windows. If valve would make my whole steam library playable on Linux, then I would not miss on anything by leaving windows.

If it's a controller then brilliant, using a game with a controller is never straight forward on PC, making devs in turn put more thought into it would be great.

If they're recruiting now, expect a product in 5-10 years.

Oh wait it's Valve? 12-15 years.

Or never. Maybe Valve are just going to hire a guy to get our hopes up for a product they have no intention of ever actually releasing,

Looks like keyboard/mouse kind of control, maybe hands free?
Biggest problem on the PC is needing to use both hands on an X-box controler and sometimes needing to use keyboard, ie skyrim, sometimes mouse/keyboard worked better than the controller.
Can't see them developing a steambox-console, after building/supporting the PC-gaming industry when many gamers were on consoles, counter productive but gaming hardware for PC would make sense so a PC can surpass new console tech.
