    John Moran has a piece

Earlier in the year I'm pretty sure it was John Moran that used the Crescent Shopping Centre as an example of why people should want the city center pedestrianised. He mentioned something like people flocking there and strolling about without fear of traffic. What he forgot to mention was the majority of the people in the crescent get there by car, it has free parking and it's enclosed from the weather and is heated.

Wonderful publicity for the city. an eye opener for some friends of mine who wouldn't believe me when I repeatedly told them Limerick City was on an upward curve.

That military museum planned for St. Munchen's Church is a great idea. Limerick has a long history of war that isn't really told anywhere.

Sounds like another quango for some people
We plan on 3000 office jobs but we have no housing for them

What quango are you referring to ? Are you unaware of their plans for Mungret. the detaiis are on their site Limerick2030. This is one of the most exciting developments Limerick city has ever been offered.

Putting 3000 people in Mungret doesn't seem too smart. How will they get into the city?

Totally think limerick 2030 is deadly but mungret can't be the solution , unless they plan to build my monorail 3000 people commuting to offices in the city centre isn't going to work.

Plans for additional housing in Mungret are pointless unless some sort of functional public transport corridor is created. They can't all drive to Raheen, Castletroy and the city centre. There is simply no road space to take them.

Limerick will never be a great city if everyone is living in the suburbs. Unfortunately Limerick 2030 just don't understand the appeal of city living.

Denis brosnan said on Nationwide that the local authority has asked them to provide housing in Mungret.

That's not good enough anymore. The local authority has sanctioned infinite sprawl and it has to stop before the M7/M20 become even more gridlocked. Castletroy is now a total joke at peak times with traffic queued back from both motorway exits into UL in the mornings.

UL is expanding year on year and there has been no new student accomodation built in the area in the last few years. The only thing that has expanded is the massive queues into the place morning and queues out in the evening.

agreed. just on UL expansion, thankfully the new president of UL has requested a campus masterplan, to include traffic access and connection with the city. he was saying he wanted something done about traffic in and out of the campus by the end of next year.

They need to open the north campus up from the Gillogue side. Mightn’t be ideal for those living there but it makes no sense to have people from the likes of Westbury or Ardnacrusha travel all the way around to get to the Health Science Building.

I thought he was incredibly weak on the housing question. Surely you need a place to live before you get a job?

They did a great job on showcasing Limerick on Nationwide last night. The city really looked fantastic and showed it for the vibrant and exciting city it is and had the potential to be :) Though, it also showed a city dominated by men imo. Thank goodness for Rosie Webb or there wouldn't be one women featured in it at all!

Agreed on limerick looking well and positive
Very weak on the housing issue

They're putting the glazing up on the Hanging Gardens building today. We'll get a good idea of what it's going to look like over the next few days I think.

If they do that, then we'll see a lot of development on that side. We should decide if that's a good thing, and we should be careful about it. This is why the Northern Distributor Road discussion is so important. Limerick will shoot itself in the feet if it permits low density development on the outskirts. There's a way of doing peripheral development right, if we must, and that's to follow the high density model with very strong sustainable transport links to the centre, while at the same time limiting opportunity for private car movements. Our big problem in Limerick is that we are planning major infrastructure, such as the NDR, without masterplanning the development of metropolitan area and this will really stifle our growth in the long term.

They could make a very simple connection from burlington to ul at a very modest cost without opening up the entire area for development. That would reduce city traffic significantly.

The issue with that is how to stop everyone using the campus as a short cut to the Castletroy area or the motorway.

  • Registered Users Posts: 801 ✭✭✭Glenomra

they don't have to allow through traffic; only access to university car parks on the Clare side. they have done the homework, they can do it easily if they want to

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,314 ✭✭✭pigtown

That then begs the question; why don't they want to?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,849 ✭✭✭Poxyshamrock

If done right, they could even extend the 301 from Westbury to serve the North Campus providing a public transport link from Corbally/Westbury to UL which in turn could link with the 304 services to provide onward travel to Castletroy area.

I seem to remember there being some issues with the farmer by the back entrance/Burlington not being willing to see land to the University.

They have no issues as regards land, they own suitable land on both sides of the canal. The reason they don't exercise this option is their fear that if it's successful nobody there will be no need to build the distributor road. Strategy

If UL wanted to they could open a barrier controlled access on the Clonlara side with access given to people who have business on campus only. Anyone found to be abusing the system can have their access revoked. This is done incredibly simply using ANPR at the 2 university exits onto the Plassey Park Road to catch through traffic ratrunners.

Simple - don't have a through road from the Clare side to the two exits on the Limerick side.

This should be prioritised and can be done on the cheap. The difference it would make to students/employees would be huge.

What about the greatly increased traffic on the Clare side? Not sure the roads over there can take it so these would need to be upgraded.
