When they got ABP approval last September they said they'd be onsite by January. There's been no other word since. There's been rumours (on here I think) of them resubmitting planning for a change of use from office to apartments.

Or student accommodation seeing as it has highly lucrative, overkill tax incentives,...

They are waiting on the Maternity to be built and then the AGS will move to the current maternity location.

There is a lot of potential along that stretch

That's the first I've heard of that. Where did you come across that info?

There were talks of co-locating the new courts complex and a new divisional Garda HQ on the courts site on Mulgrave St. This was not progressed, firstly the site was not big enough for both, and had it been built would have resulted in 2 district HQ’s being at opposite ends of the same road. It would also have seen the Limerick City North District station located within the boundary of the Limerick City South District.

There is need for a new station though, Henry Street station is not fit for purpose and the station party has outgrown the station, with 2 floors in the neighbouring building being acquired to provide the space required. There isn’t adequate parking for the Gardai who work there and the official vehicles.

I would agree that the site could be put to much better use, however there are no sites within the city centre which would accommodate the building of a new Garda Divisional HQ, with the exception of other prime sites (and I would submit that it does need to be in the city centre).

There is also the fact that a lot of money has been spent recently in completely remodelling and refurbishing the cell area of Henry St, and in remodelling the 2 floors they have in Estuary House – including the building of a very impressive divisional control room. So while it’s needed, both to provide the station party with a decent workplace and to free up the site it currently sits on, I don’t see it happening any time soon.

Unlikely that they will move across the river, besides I've heard that site is earmarked for residential when the maternity moves.

Saw it in the leader, think one of the city TD's was suggesting it. LL has a paywall so cant access it

A TD suggesting it and firm plans for it to happen are 2 very different things though.

Plenty of space for a new HQ in beside Colbert station (where the old abandoned filling station was and now is a carpark). I remember seeing plans for a future potential multi story development when the station plaza was being proposed. It would be a good location for a Garda station too.

It would also really cap off the water front and create an impressive skyline if they put in another high rise office or apartment building where the current Garda station is, provided the mysteriously quiet Bishops Quay project ever gets going.

There isn't really that much room. The bus station is due to move to that side of the train station and the design proposal for the offices had them on stilts above this area to accommodate this. Also one of Henry Streets issues is lack of parking for Garda vehicles. Where do you propose they would park here? Then there's the issue of it being too close to Roxboro.

Not only too close to Roxboro, but actually within the Roxboro district boundary.

What will happen the area where buses currently pick up and drop?

Okay there would be 2 situations i can see unfolding from moving a district HQ into another districts area.

1, Time effort and money being spent to redraw the boundary lines.
2, An absurd situation, were the boundary to not be redrawn, where a Garda station wouldn't have administrative and investigative jurisdiction immediately outside the station door.

Some background: A Garda's powers can be exercised in any part of the state, however for administrative purposes they will usually operate within their own District and forward any criminal investigation from another District to the District in which the crime took place.

Locating the Limerick City North District HQ in the Limerick City South area would result in having to pass any crimes that happen outside the station to the Limerick City South District HQ in Roxboro for investigation. Which would be a farsical situation.

The images were only indicative of the the preferred mass and scale for a potential future development on the site and had bus/taxi bays included, im assuming for a new coach station. It wasn't an actual or intended proposal. The car park was to go as far back to where careys rd meets the roxboro rd(behind the houses in the railway sidings)

A new garda station could easily accommodate a multistory car park for garda/personal vehicles on that site. The issue of the district boundaries etc, I haven't a clue. Its all naval gazing anyway. I just feel it would be a good idea to have a police station/hq centrally located in the city.

The plan was the plaza, a new bus station and refurbishment of the train station. The buildings were possible future options not included in the initial scheme.

I'd actually love to know if they're going ahead with moving the bus station.

The Council are going back to the drawing board on Wickham Street, which is good news. They're proceeding with the shoddy design for Parnell Street unfortunately.

The place is a kip lads.

Again in there on Thursday, and O Connell street........just feel so sad and embarassed.

Why do the council hate the city center so much? :-( Like, how can anyone from the council go into that city center and not be ashamed of themselves.

Every year goes by and nothing changes......are we just waiting for a miracle/one day all this construction and clean up will start?

    My hit list priority:
The entire length of o connell street. New foot paths and trees. Not that awful ****ty pavement stuff they put down. Been to some third world countries, they've nicer pavements than us ejits.
GET THE FOOKING OPERA CENTER PROPOSAL GOING! FFS*&^%$$
Train/bus station area. What a fcuking kip. Really now.
    Old sarsfield street Dunnes
Cobble some streets in the georgian area of the city. Even partially cobble.
Make it law/legislation that building owners (even if unoccupied) wash their windows and maintain the building.
Every morning, street bins are emptied. Its a small city. Could they have even one designated person?
The mess that is park valley (10 year eye sore).

Is it time to start taking to the streets and protest over what a bad job they are doing? How can they be held accountable?

Can I add one more thing in and your 100% - a traffic cop stationed in the middle of william street handing out tickets left right and centre to anyone that parks on the right hand lane. Including delivery drivers! We can build him a little hut with a kettle.

    Now, thats some list.

Uber are fitting out the 1st floor of the Thomas Street block adding another 100 people to that section alone.
There is a new Mace shop going in on the ground floor unit also of the same block on the corner.

Thomond Park are fitting out a brand new bar in the West Stand.
Samco in Adare are building a brand new production facility.
Milford Hospice have recently done up the old existing nursing home first floor, they are looking at doing up the ground floor now.
The extension to Limerick Prison will be going ahead now that a contractor has been appointed. It should be starting in October-ish
Not limerick related but equally impacts the city - Shannon Commerical Properties new Hangar in Shannon will be going to site shortly.

Totally share your sentiments.Any good thing link the Gardens International site is undermined by a lack of upkeep-crap, dirty pavements, dirty gutters, lack of bins, buildings not be cleaned/painted.i genuinely think the Council must close their eyes to these issues.

That’s a risky move with two very popular Centra stores in town. Look what happened that Costcutter by The George Hotel. Maybe they think with approx. 500 people upstairs that they’re onto a winner and they may be right.
