ah **** thought so any sort of way of claiming it on private health insurance

Found it - it cost $2751. I did get to claim it against my tax, but it was still a big hit. Only private health insurance I found that covered dental was over $7k for myself, wife and kid - but I'm sure it'd be cheaper for someone single. You might have a waiting period before you can get any dental work done though.

By the way - I got mine done in Sydney CBD, and did get shafted on the price. I know other people have been quoted a good bit less elsewhere.

That would depend on your exact plan and cover

Yea most providers will waive general dental. I got bupa to waive the two month waiting period on most of my extras.

Unfortunately a crown falls under Major Dental and you need to wait the 12 months for that.

Same as pregnancy stuff I think...not that I'll be using that any time soon :D

You get sorted with them Karl?

I was on Gold Cover with my choice extras which covered me for Private treatment in hospital plus extras but it was costing over $200 per month.

When I rang Bupa about something else the really nice guy on the phone kinda took me aside and was like "look...do you really need Gold Cover? The public system over here is just as good for most things and it will save you $90 a month which is over $1k a year to switch to Classic Cover."

It still covers me for doctors and hospital and ambo etc but i just wont be in a private room if I ever need hospital treatment and I will have to sit on a waiting list if I need to see a specialist but the waiting lists over here aren't nearly as bad as at home so I took his advice, switched and now I'm on Classic Cover with My Choice Extras. About $130 a month.

If your are PR what dental benefits do yout get from Medicare i.e. do they cover / contribute to root canals crowns / heavy dental work.

Anyone recommend a private policy to cover all this stuff as the cost of dental over here is jaw dropping

The cost of dental may seem expensive in Australia however it's cheaper than Ireland.

I got work done here that was quoted at over EUR 60K in Ireland for about $15K all in. (4 ceramic crowns and a root canal restoration). And I get to claim 20% back in tax.

The quality of dental work here is higher too.

Not for anything I've needed done - scale & polish, checkup, fillings. In fact its generally double to triple the price.

My wife paid $215 for a checkup at the weekend - its EUR40 at Smiles, where I used to go when back home - http://www.smiles.ie/routine/price-list

Yea went with them in the end thanks for the info, i think its something like 68 per week and thats for 2 adults and one infant.
Its the classic cover as well i dont need private, sure having the baby here we ended up with a single room and public is considered a double room there could be 4 in a private room at home.

Much better quality of dental work over here i couldnt stress that enough, my dentist saved some of my teeth although shes mad to do some veneers at 900 a pop

60k!! What were you getting your old teeth growin from stem cells and a jaw replacement lol

Dental here is at least double the price, 170 for a clean and check up and i think thats a pretty good price....

You can claim dental back on tax how does that work? how much?
