Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Confused seventeen year old here. I don't know a whole load about politics, and I wanna know what "wing" am I on.

    My beliefs and opinions:
    • Abortion should be legal
    • Death penalty should be implemented
    • I'm the type of person who says "fair play" when a victim gets revenge
    • No problem with people of a different sexual orientation getting married
    • Marijuana should be legalised

I also believe that many of these beliefs may have only solidified in my head since I joined boards, which is a...good thing? :pac:

Also, which political wing are you on?

Do you need to be on one or the other? Why not just hold the views you have without pigeonholing yourself?

Well if you're voting for a political party, you sort of have to pigeon-hole yourself to the one that represents your views most closely.

    Me, I'm left-wing.

As is everyone. It's no problem to describe yourself as say left-wing, but with right-wing stances on certain issues.

Well yeah, that's true to a certain extent. I still wouldn't base who I'm voting for on who most closely matches my ideals though. That's the thing about putting yourself into a particular category... often times it's at the expense of pragmatism.

Left and Right are very general terms. A person (or party) could be conservative in financial matters, but liberal in social matters. Or vice-versa.

According to the test posted above, I score similar to the Dalai Lama!

The terms left wing and right wing were first coined during the French revolution (alright I looked it up in Wikipedia but I thought you might like to know).

They say you get more right-wing as you get older. I'm experiencing the total opposite and particularly since moving here, I've become very sure on where I stand on contentious social and economic issues.

It would be impossible to interpret my answers to a lot of those questions the way I intended them. I'm far more of a right wing capitalist but that doesn't mean I seek to create and protect international monopolies.

Your views are neither left nor right, that's an economic/government stance. With those questions you are talking about whether you are personally liberal or conservative. I would say you are pretty liberal.

I don't like the use of the words 'Authoritarian' and 'Libertarian', there's obvious negative conetations with the first and the latter implies a positive political outlook. I come out dead centre and slightly to the left. I agree with me.

Can't really see myself being that far to the left, think I'd be a bit more centrist on that scale really.

    I'm libertarian.

I believe in equal rights for minorities, including marriage equality and I'm pro-choice. At the same time, I'm a free-market capitalist and/or libertarian anarchist. I believe in the deregulation of the banking sector, lowering tax on all fronts and removing a vast amount, if not all, social welfare and just the general removal of pointless parasitic red tape in the law.

I'm anti-privilege and socially liberal which means I don't fit into the false left/right dichotomy.

I think people on 'the left' and 'the right' can be equally contemptible.

I believe right-wing authoritarians are the absolute scum of the earth.
Right-wing authoritarianism (RWA) is a personality and ideological variable studied in political, social, and personality psychology. Right-wing authoritarians are people who have a high degree of willingness to submit to authorities they perceive as established and legitimate, who adhere to societal conventions and norms, and who are hostile and punitive in their attitudes towards people who don't adhere to them. They value uniformity and are in favour of using group authority, including coercion, to achieve it
