Rumour has it that Tesco are opening on the old Hi-Way site

Petrol pumps and all. Personally I hope this happens.

It might soften Mr. O'Toole's cough! After all the chaos he has caused recently!

I'll believe it when I see it.

So many rumours in the last 10-15 years about big chains coming to Tuam and they remained as just that - rumours.

Tesco was blocked previously by repeated objections by O'Toole's alright (this is on public record). The only thing I could imagine being a planning block here would be the road quality outside the premises. It's a regional road, so wouldn't be of the national standard you'd expect for a large premises like Tesco+pumps, which you would imagine would bring a high volume of traffic. Also - with Tesco and Dunnes in Galway, SuperValu and Lidl in Tuam, and even a Tesco of equal size in Claremorris, would Tesco bother with the investment there? Doubt it.

If Tesco can turn a profit in Mayo with stores in Castlebar, Westport, Ballina, Swinford, Claremorris and Ballinrobe then they'd have no issues with opening in Tuam .............still not likely to happen though.
