My graphics card has 2 DVI ports and I'm running 2 monitors from them at the moment. ( 1 in each )

I've seen dvi splitter's where you can run 2 monitors from the 1 port.

Is it possible to run 3 monitors using 1 normal DVI port and a splitter in the other running the other 2 ?

    cheers.

Splitter just mirrors the input to both outputs.

What you need is to buy a graphics card with 3 outputs. Various modern ati/nvidia ones can do it, cheapest is about e100 I think. Also helpful if your monitors support DisplayPort.

I know a person in my job that has only 1 DVI port, She uses a splitter and she has 2 monitors running.. Both showing different windows. Is that because she only has 1 DVI port?

These are work PC's so I can't add parts.

Maybe she has something like this: http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/dh2go/digital_se/

It's much simpler and cheaper to just buy a modern mid-range graphics card tho.

If you're already using 2 dvi ports I don't think its possible as its a graphics card limitation. The only way to get more than 2 dvi powered screens with 1 card is using a displayport active adapter or a sapphire flex card which has an inbuilt adapter allowing you to use 2dvi + 1 hdmi. Or one of the new expensive nvidia 6 series cards.

OP: Are you sure? What exact make of cable is it?

All those non-powered cables I see only advertise they mirror the signal: http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Unlimited-DVI-D-Splitter-PCM-2260/dp/B000H09RFM Also note the many many warnings in the reviews

If you are sure it works for them, and they have the same setup as you - then go for it.

@spix: Cheap amd cards can handle 3 monitors fine, don't need to spend lots on nvidia.

I know they can, but only the sapphire flex cards or by using an active displayport to dvi adapter which is approx 30 euro.

If you got Display port monitors then you don't need any converters at all.
