I was out visting a mate of mine in Malahide this morning.
He is in the process of building a garden retaining wall of 20 feet long about 2 feet high.

His bricks are 150mm wide and he has his trench dug out to 350mm wide and 250mm deep.

I asked him was he using any 804/hardcore in the foundation trences, and he said No....He would just mix up the cement in a mixer and pour it straight in.

So should he put in some 804 hardcore and compact it down,as a base for the concrete??

    Thanks.:)

For a 2 foot high wall? Noddatall.

For a higher wall (e.g. house extension) put some steel in the base. Steel will reduce/prevent risk of cracking if the earth moves.
