    Hi,
In the 1911 census fleet street in South Dublin seemed to have quite a few office buildings which were also dwellings. 4.1 fleet street was home to my GG grandfather who was a caretaker. Does anyone know what offices these were in 1911?

    Thanks

The business listed at the address in 1914 is the 'Dublin Loan & Discount bank'. The same business is listed at the address in 1906.

In 1910 – 1914 the Dublin Loan & Discount Bank was a trading style for a Jewish moneylender named Julius Solomon. Interesting article by Cormac Ó Gráda here http://mauricio.econ.ubc.ca/pdfs/ograda.pdf

Looking at the existing numbering of Fleet St. it is not clear where no.4 is/was located. It is quite possible that the building is gone, as most of the street has been demolished and rebuilt – the ESB (or was it initially Shell?) built the 1960’s office block on the southside eastern end and also an artdeco-looking transformer station on the northside western end.

just spotted that 1910 has another business at number 4

    'Irish Military Gazette'

based on the street listings number 4 was on the northern side of the street close to the junction with Bedford Row at the western end of the street. The location now seems to be that sub-station that pedroeibar1 mentioned.

    Hi
Julius Solomon was my Grandfather, He was a moneylender. He was dead before I was born. I'd love to hear of any info you might have

Hi mickygan, it might be better to start another thread for this. Did you check the Census records online? He was a solitary figure, described as a 'financial agent' in 1911 and even though he states he was born in Dublin, he doesn't appear in the 1901 census. Solomon is a grand Jewish name, probably a convert? Others here might direct you better than I can.

Thanks. I had seen the census.
I believe that 4.1 Fleet st is where Morgan's Hotel is situated. The guy in the Plaque Shop remembers the original house
