As a tenant, Am I legally allowed to use the internet wholly?!

The lease (now signed) stated that the tenant was not permitted to view
    1) Pornography;
    2) Movies online
    3)TV shows online
4)any material of an explicit nature
    *)and there was more....

I am wondering whether or not the said infringe on my Human Rights?! which states that one is entitled to use the internet wholly, and in its entirety insofar as that it is legal. I.E legal pornography, legal movies, and legal TV shows (such as 4OD)...

Any brainiac Boffin out there able to help me out?!

    Thanks a lot,

Then why did you sign the lease?

Are you living with the landlord?

If you pay the bill, you can do what you want, but if its being provided than the landlord can state his own it policy.

Who owns the internet connection?(as in paying the bill)

Whoever owns it has a right to police it. If the LL owns it, he has that right to know what goes on if the internet account is under his\her name. If you own it, you have that right to police what goes on if the account is in your name.

The internet is a human right now? What a crock.

Sounds like the landlord is paying for a service that is capped. Therefore he doesn't want you streaming movies, etc. all the time. Also, since it's his connection, any wrongdoing would be traced back to him.

I am guessing the landlord/lady wants to protect themselves from illegal down loads etc. Its a grey area in tenancy.

If you want something just get your own internet.

    Outside that..... Get different lease.

I have to say though... This is a first for me and i have seen some complaints about landlords etc.

Perhaps the PRTS or the PTRS or even the PTSB can help......

I hear lying eyes is out of jail... She is fam with internet useage and how it gets you into trouble,

Where did the quote about Internet being a human right come from? I'd imagine it's spirit is in the context of uncensored news, rather than movie downloads!

    Thanks a lot,

The piece in bold is obviously a pisstake.

As long as the LL doesn't live with you, deactivate the a/c in his name and set up your own.

I can't see the issue. Illegal d/l'ing will be traced to your IP address not his. However with all this three strikes and your out bollix by the ISP who knows how it will impact on the a/c holder.

Sounds like a Fair Usage policy. Watching TV shows/movies apparently eats up the bandwidth. One flat I rented was advertised as having free Internet. 2 months later when the LL finally gets around to installing it he lays a down similiar policy. Personally I decided to get my own Internet in, that way I could use it however I wanted.

If you are the account holder you are in charge, if the LL is providing the service then they are. Internet is not a required service that LLs have to provide so you don't really have any "rights". I guess you could compare it to laundry facilities - the LL provides a washing machine for the tenants but you don't have full and complete rights over when you get to use it, it's for everyone to use. If you get to the washing machine and another tenant is already using it then you have to wait untill it's not in use.

And to contrast - if the LL decides to provide heating free of charge; this is not required, it's an extra service. You can't demand it be turned on at a specific time to suit you. You can ask, but the LL doesn't have to accomodate you because it's a service that they're not required to provide.
