O... So many people are so mean and hard to the OP
I admit the message is unclear but he's all upset and distraught!
OP can you recover the position; has the interview actually taken place, etc. Don't go letting yourself down, be professional, find out the process & see what you can recover. Remember, if you still have 3 months another job might come up as quickly as this apparently did.

( thou jobs are rarely turned around as quick: particularly in a place like FAS... Maybe there's a loop you're not onto... Might be worth discussing with another manager...calmly & rationally

You're upset because your boss said that your colleague would be great for this new position? Wtf. Would you not just get over yourself, pull your socks up and apply for the position yourself?

I've worked in the public sector. These jobs are open internally to everyone. You don't need anyone's permission to apply. If you think you'd be better at the job than your colleague then go ahead and prove it.
