As posted above, it certainly wouldn't make me inclined to buy Nike. Being a bit of a traditionalist I can't see myself moving from titleist, callaway or TM just because Rory plays otherwise. Would that not be one of the major reasons Nike would award him such money....to entice new customers?

They may entice new customers. Not lads that have always played the usual big names.

lads just starting out or going into the golf shops and getting their first sets of clubs will probably be drawn to Nike.

    Thats Nike's hope id imagine.

Nike equipment is seriously good nowadays.

Their VR Pro drivers are as good as anything on the market.

Any chance another company could try & snap him up? Taylormade, callaway?

    Don't see why they would.

Those companies are quite loaded with pros, in comparison to Nike.

Tigers supporting cast is basically Schwartzel.

    Is Paul Casey Nike too?

All these companies would love him on the books, but most can't afford to go in to a financial battle against Nike, they just too big!

Then you're possibly not part of Nike's target market. Whatever about Titleist being a "traditional" golf manufacturer, I'm pretty sure both TM and callaway have only been in the golf business for 30ish years. If this happens to be longer than you've played golf then they'll seem traditional to you. Nike have been selling clubs for approx 15 years, so say you've only started playing golf in the last 10 years, then they're just another company in the market. If you then see that the No. 1 player in the world is moving to them and the No. 2 player also plays Nike, you may think that this is an indicaton of quality.

Rumour has it that Nick Watney is also moving from Titleist to Nike, so that would be 3 players in the current top 20.

Again what pro's play doesn't really influence me, but companies pay lots of money because enough people are influenced by what brands they see on TV

The reason Rory left Chubby was because Clarke and Westwood have a share in ISM so saw everything Rory was getting and had a piece of all his deals etc...

I would be surprised if GMac saw any of this. I would say Rory has it sorted that his deals are his own.

If the company gets a piece of Pie, the shareholder get a piece of the Pie too, Rory left Chubby cause he believed he was not being looked after correctly and people around him thought the 2 lads were getting alot more of Chubby's time than he was.

horizon would be negotiating this on rorys behalf and would get their fee of which gmac, as a 30% shareholder, gets a cut of.

Taylormade (adidas) could match Nike's spending power, but probably have a big enough stable to mean it wouldn't be worth their while getting into a bidding war

Can guarantee the reason he left was he had the hump that they saw/were involved in his dealings.

That is the only reason I am surprised to see GMac with 30%, although if he was upfront from the start Rory would know this.

Taylor made are not even close to Nike, Nike turn over in 2011 was 20.7 Billion, a few weeks back we got the TM Quarterly Report for Q1 2012, Turn over just over 500 million. Nike affiliated brands like Hurley, converse and Umbro will turn over in the same region.

Taylormade are owned by adidas. TM financials are looking at a small division within the adidas business.
If they wanted to compete for Rory then adidas can pony up the cash for any deal.
Adidas had annual turnovers of over €13bn for their last financial year, which was roughly 18-19bn USD - fairly close to what Nike take in. The TM figures you would have seen would be the equivalent of looking at the Umbro figures in isolation, without factoring in the ability of Nike to bankroll them when needed (i.e. the England national team - where Adidas would have easily outbid Umbro otherwise)
If you look at their latest financials both companies are in a fairly similar cash position as well.

I take your point and agree, But it is Nike the main holding company not Nike Golf, making the bid, This would be the same as Adidas making a bid for them, which they simply will not do according to people I know inside the ropes at Adidas, Taylor made appear to make their own deals as do Umbro and Hurley for example.

From what I've been told, normally Nike Golf do their own deals as well (as do all of the Nike divisions), but Nike make exceptions for the big ticket deals.

My point was that if TM/adidas decided that they really wanted Rory, then adidas could quite easily provide the financial muscle to allow TM to do so (probably offering a combined deal for TM equipment and adidas clothing/shoes).

BTW - Umbro's England kit deal is bankrolled by Nike. It's kept under the Umbro brand for mainly nostalgic/historical reasons that they hope will keep the fans happy.

That is my point, That Adidas do not get involved in Taylor Made sponsorship deals, where as Nike Parent is calling the shots on this and all the big deals they go after.
