Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Reading through some newspapers at lunch and I saw a headline where some dude has a bit of a rant at his ex-wife. Not sure what the story was about but the headline contained a quote with the phrase "f**k off" in it.

I couldn't give a **** about what someone said to someone else but it got me wondering why papers and sites like this stick * in the middle of words, like the way sh*t has been *'d earlier in my sentence

It's not like anyone doesn't know what was said or written, so why * out a few random letters?

It is so papers can maintain the pretence of being a higher moral authority. Even though anybody with half a brain cell knows that's bollocks.

I can understand it in papers but I can't understand why it's done on boards. Any kids on the internet know exactly what the curses are anyway. No need to give them the * treatment.

  • Registered Users Posts: 297 ✭✭RossyG

The weird thing is, the written versions of swearwords are just signs denoting taboo verbal sounds, so in a way the F-word written in full and f**k are exactly the same. You see them and know what the word in question is, so why is one more acceptable than the other?

Keep in mind folks, that circumventing this sites swear filter can and will result in infractions. So stop pretending you're being clever and cut it out.

PHUN PHACT: Tosspot isn't rude. It's a medieval word for a drunkard. The pot in question was a tankard of ale that was tossed down the throat.

Even more of a fun fact: we had Little Con call the local priest a "tosspot" and poor Little Con was chased back to the school!

That and I think it's for legal reasons or something. Since under 18s are on it. And they're supposed to be supervised by parents (I think it's part of the conditions you agree to).

Nope, that's circumventing it. I'm not even sure if you're meant to be typing in anything that gets filtered, to be honest. Might ask an admin about it.

Is it really that difficult to not swear?

Is it not considered circumventing the swear filter to leave out the last two letters of "human jism"?

Would it not be better to tell them to keep it up, and thank them, so that the database of edited words/words that should be edited can grow?

    Just copy and paste all of those words, then they will appear with a **** load of ******* stars that should be in the place of words like ****, ****, ****, ****, ***********, *****, *******, *******, ***, ***********, *********************************************, ***, *, *******, ***, **********, *****, **, *********, ***, *****, *****, *********, ****, *********, *******, *****, ***, ***************, ********************, *****, *********, ****** and ****.

no, it's not at all but I don't see why anyone should be upset or offended by a simple word. If it is directed at an individual that's not on but using words generally is just as valid as any other word in my mind, the concept of 'bad words' is frankly ridiculous IMO

I never really understood myself why certain words has to be **** in papers etc.

Most of us here would use these words everyday and it's hard to believe that in 2012 someone would faint at the sight of a curse word.
