Holes in potatoes.

I have recently started to dig up my potatoes and there are holes in alot of them especially where the soil is damp in places but not in the dry parts. the field was ploughed up this year abut before this it was used as grazing land for cattle for the past 30 years. i was just wondering was it wireworm... why is it attacking my potatoes and how to do i stop it. any advise would be great...

slugs I'd say. Some people throw pellets down in the drill with the spuds. Also throw them around the stems before the foliage closes over and stops the pellets getting to the ground. But pellets are a hot topic on here
