Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Me, I love books .
There are books all over the house.Hope they don't find out where I live.;)
For the second time in the same week, I am addressing the subject of Nabi Daniel Street in Alexandria, first discussed its famous synagogue, and now I wish to write about its book market. As part of the cultural heritage of Egypt’s second largest city, this street was the subject of a vicious—and frankly barbaric—assault from the new Islamist governor. The Alexandria security service chose the early hours of Friday morning to carry out its assault on the old book market. The attackers did it in style, too; they destroyed the kiosks and threw the books savagely into piles of rubble in the street and then left without even providing an explanation to the distraught owners who depend solely on these kiosks to earn a living.

    Faherheit 451 ?.

Kind of pointless nowadays, most the books they will burn you can download for free. So this is just a symbolic exercise by one of the wnkaer parties.

The Arabs, they remind me of this quote (from somewhere) “When smashing monuments, save the pedestals they will always come in handy"

As lovely as the city is in scenery and as rich as it is in history, it probably has the highest concentration of Islamists in the entire country. Islamists on the street backed up by Islamists in office never leads to anything good for anyone.

It's a shame really considering Alexandria would actually be a much nicer tourist destination than any of the red sea resorts.

Too little, too late by anyone that tries this. The internet is now making all manuscripts available.
Until they cut off the internet world wide, they are on a fools errand.

They are just making themselves look stupid - and backward!

    Idiots!

Not really. Internet penetration isn't huge outside of cities and even at that you need to be reasonably comfortable to afford it. Less than 30% have access to the internet at home.

Cutting off the poor from information is all they're doing here.

Iran has forbidden the study of humanities and some some of the western social sciences because it could give doubt and be in conflict with the "book".

You would think humanities and social sciences are the the sciences of true world equality, it is those sciences that equates us all as human. It is those sciences that evolved from calling tribal people savages to eventually leading to the universal charter of human rights.

    More "systematic destruction of history"

Books are proven in long term data storage. The internet, which is really a bunch of hard drives linked together, isn't.
We'll be back in the dark ages some day wondering what happened!

True - however when a lot of them poor kids grow up, a lot at least see there is information out there accessible that the government of the day, never bothered to mention and sometimes they come in contact with it via work and a pc or other means even in paper form later.

End of the day, there is two things stupidly responsible for censorship, religion and governments.

Both are just stupid at the best of times - and sadly, always at the worst of times!

others HAVE BEEN just as bad...at the moment it's really just Islam being used as a carte blanche for people and governments to engage in barbaric dark age violent wankerism on an industrial scale.

Poor Alexandria, the Christians did exactly the same when they took control of the city in the 4th Century (also murdering Hypatia, one of the greatest female philosophers in history, by skinning her alive with sea shells and roof tiles).

the problem with islam is mohammad and his teaching and his promotion of violence against non believers

people do crazy things in the name of religion but most are carrying out the violence which contradicts their beliefs unfortunately Islamists are not

    not really fixed.
while the war on terror is certainly a smoke screen for all kinds of covert neo-con BS, the global arseholery of modern fundy Islamists is just as insidious and all the more worrying as it masquerades as legitimate religious ferver.

Them and to some degree (sorry to mention them but they are up to something similar in a smaller scale) so are the Scientology cult.

They are barring their members (victims?) from gaining material and/or telling them to stay away from information and books.
They are even limiting internet access through computers supplied with blocking software, etc.

Thankfully a lot of members have the ability to ignore their daft masters wishes still though!

Well, yeah. I didn't intend on precluding Islam as being a cause of violence. My point was, religious fundamentalists arn't the only ones who can twist a belief to incite violence.

How is that done I wonder, destroying something in a stylish manner. Worth looking into.

From German poet and writer Heinrich Heine who wrote in 1821 and who books were burnt by the Nazis in 1933

"where they burn books, they will ultimately burn people also".

Yeah I agree , by controlling information ,you can shape ideas and how people think. Because of the poverty and lack of internet access there, I would say there is a huge sway of people that can be manipulated if they are denied access to information/alternative points of view.

This has already occured many times before , civilisation has been wiped out to caveman level and had to rebuild with no knowledge .

it is likely that some knowledge was buried somewhere for this eventuality
but if its been found its being kept well secret.

looking at egypt and the mayans / aztecs etc its obvious we had high tech societys in the ancient past , possibly even millions or hundreds or millions of years ago , all wiped out in some planet wide disaster .

obvioulsy some governments assume it will happen again .
