I never exceed 2mb and everyday as soon as kids get off school the speeds drop to under 0.8mb.

    Not too hot really.

There has to be serious contention issues on the line as there is just one user here in the house atm - why would a 3mb line be so poor on such a regular basis?

This is as good as it gets which is a lot better than it is in the evenings or at weekends.

No different if speed tested on eircom website.

My issue is not with only getting 1.75mb from a 3mb line - that is bearable but it would be nice to get 2mb plus here on the primary jack coming into the house.

My issue is not getting that speed in the evenings.

Engineer has been out and our line in house is fine but I think Eircom can send a bit more down the line - try and get us closer to the 3mb if possible and what can be done about the pm contention issues?

You are PROBABLY on a rural exchange that is contended to hell. Only by complaining a LOT like some people around here have done with Monasterevin , Golden in Tipp , Inch St lawrence in Limerick ( to recall a few) will eircom do anything....eventually.

Many rural exchanges only have around 16mbits for all their customers and some 32mbits . The next jump up would be to 155mbits, a huge increase. UPC say they will give you 150mbits all to yourself but only if you move to a city. :)

^ Spot on Bob rurual yes outside Dundalk and house is about what 2-3miles from exchange.

155 would be a massive increase should mean being able to get more like 8mb at best times!

I'd ask someone on the other side of the village if they slow down at those times too...to completely rule out the cable.

Also run a ping when it is fast and another when it is slow and compare them in ms.

command prompt window, paste this in and hit return

    ping mail1.eircom.net -t

    Should be 30ms or less.

Finally see if anyone you know living near the exchange qualifies for 7.6mbits broadband or whether the entire area is throttled back to 3mbits max....a sure sign there is no backhaul.

I will ask as there is a pub near the exchange so can see what they get - the M1 motorway is between us.:)

Can you explain the backhaul bit?

Those pings are high and all over the place as well.

eircom has fibre, generally along the old N1 road and a smidge towards Ardee. I take it your exchange is not shown on this map before I do any explaining???

    http://www.nextgenerationnetwork.ie/eircom-fibre-network

Your exchange can be checked against the line checker here > www.homevision.ie in case you are not actually connected where you think and are therefore on a longer line than you suspect....which would explain high pings too.

    Hi Bob,

We are on the Ravensdale Exchange which is what I thought.

From the NGN map it definitely looks like Dundalk is a core aggregation site but Ravensdale is not listed as a Node Reach Site, however the 4 lines shooting out from Dundalk definitely appear to be where we are which is left of Ravensdale on that map.

Ravensdale could be connected to some wheezy old pre ethernet gear .

An NGN node means that the backhaul is Certainly Ethernet not PDH ( bless us all ) or ATM of some sort.

They would most likely not upgrade the ADSL gear at all on a small exchange but going to fibre/ethernet means you have 1gbit of backhaul and going to wireless/ethernet means you have minimum 155mbits of backhaul.

If the backhaul is borked then it should be a parish wide issue once you check around and you need to get the whole parish to give out to eircom en masse.

    Thanks Bob.

I got the impression from an eircom engineer that they could not be bothered updating these exchanges and will just wait and wait until the fibre is ready whenever that maybe!

I'll defo check around and see what the story is - I think Eircom bank on the idea that we are mostly quite busy and most never take the time to create a fuss.

In this case a fuss is definitely worth creating as a doubling or trebling of BB would make a big difference.

How rubbish is this? 10% of what is promised.

At this speed even a simple voip call is patchy!

Can someone from eircom tell me what the exchange capacity is please as this is shocking but typical.

Going to do a few of these tonight to demonstrate the pick up as people go to bed or get off the net!

my line was the same for months, high pings in the 150 to 400 mark for a year, only around 6pm to 12pm. They sent out engineers to the house who's one persons response was "playing games drains the router power:cool:!". Sent out four different ones and they all said there was a fault in the line. They updated the exchange where I live and is now always in the 30's. If enough people complain, they will update the exchange but if they dont they'll leave it the way it is. Most exchanges have 2005 thecnology and eircom wont update. It doesnt cost thousands to update them so I dont know why they dont update all of them

Thanks mate! Might start a local campaign to get it upgraded! Thankfully I don't play online games as how could you with these speeds! :)
    What ois you speed now?

Actual saw this one spike at just over 2mb! :)

    2196588716.png

Hit 2.8mb so this is all just contended to hell as was said earlier in thread!

2196590072.png A new record for my line!

    Getting interesting now! :D

    2196591914.png

If I could work from 12am-10am that would be ideal!

Hey I have 8mb broadband now
pings currently always stable in the 30's
unless they update the exchange, ur stuck with it
obviously u cant get upc where u live, same as me
Download speed always around 870 kbs which I cant complain with, even when I had the high ping rates
All you can do is complain and if they ask to send a "engineer" out 2 ur house let one come out. These guys are about as trained as a tin of sardines, all they can detect with there "equipment" is a fault in the line
