Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Cant believe its been nearly 3years since the kick starter started.
I have one or two other that's similar length as well; but being Kickstarter for me it was a donation at the time that might give me a game in the future :P

Forgot I even backed this, it has been getting rave reviews from people who have it already, looking forward to putting some time into it this weekend, if it can keep me away from FF Type-0 and Bloodborne next week it will speak volumes about how good it is.

Cheapest I've found it is 31 on g2play

You can get it for 31 on GreenMan gaming through their VIP section. I got it there yesterday.

    Has it been that long?

I backed it for $20, looking like it will be well worth that :D

The wait is finally drawing to a close... And I'm going on holiday for a week and a half on Sunday. Fingers crossed this works on my Surface, so I can drive Mrs Raphael nuts by refusing to do anything while we're away!

Sure that's the point of going on holiday to exotic places......to spend it in the hotel room playing games. :D

Completely didn't realise this had a release date yet!

Pre-load is a go, all 18GB of it!

Keys for Steam and GOG available on the backers site. I'm opting for no cloud saves or automatic updates and going with the guys who have no DRM and believe a dollar is a different unit of currency to a euro. i.e. GOG.

Don't worry, your choice of provider is fine with me :)

Activated on Steam and Preload is on progress. Only 17 hours to go.

Edit: That's till it unlocks, not on the preload. That would be some disgraceful internet.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,216 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

It says the game unlocks in approx. 7 hours...what the hell? I was sure it was midnight. Need to try and change my plans so :P

And I've only now realised it was supposed to be out today.

Polygon has an article on character classes /builds (specifically how Pillars is trying to avoid needing the traditional Fighter / Priest / Rogue teams:

I admire their aim but I have misgivings about their solution. All attributes matter to all classes. I enjoy having to have each character be a specialist. Oh well we'll see how it works out.

Reviewing very well so far, most reviews are saying it is the Baldur's Gate sequel we deserved and never got.

    RPS:

It’s a triumph. A wonderful, enormous and spellbinding RPG, gloriously created in the image of BioWare’s Infinity classics, but distinctly its own. A classic in every sense.
    Videogamer:

Pillars of Eternity is modern, while evoking the past. It’s accessible, but satisfyingly complex. Its quality is undeniable, and it’s particularly heartening to see Obsidian, the underdog RPG studio with a string of thrown-bones and rough diamonds behind it, pour its sweat and passion into something they obviously love – and utterly nail it.
Editor's Note: Despite playing Pillars of Eternity for 26 hours, and despite loving it like his own, Jim's not ready to put a score on his review just yet, as he hasn't finished the game. When he finally does so, sometime in 2143, we will update accordingly.

    PC Gamer - 92/100

This is a big, fat, deep adventure that lets you carve your own unique path through a fantasy world that’s been brilliantly brought to life with rich, evocative writing. It’s a game steeped in a bygone era of computer RPG design, but somehow it doesn’t feel archaic. Obsidian have always been bound to other peoples’ worlds—Fallout, Dungeons & Dragons, Star Wars, South Park—but in creating their own from scratch, they’ve made not only their best game to date, but one of the best RPGs on PC.

    Eurogamer - Recommended

It's an RPG with design firmly rooted in nostalgia, but one that absolutely doesn't rely on it to be enjoyable today. Instead, it's both a great reminder of why those games worked so well, and a brand new adventure well worth the hours upon hours (upon hours upon hours) that it takes to pick away at its secrets and its world.

    Gamewatcher - 9/10

All you really need to know though, is this; Pillars of Eternity is a triumph. If you’re a backer and a fan of those classic Infinity Engine games, you’re in for a real treat, a smart and complex adventure that will keep you entertained and absorbed for possibly the rest of your life, and certainly until the already announced expansion pack comes out. Even those who never got on with those classic games should give it a go, because there’s a tonne of smart design choices in here that smooth out the rough edges that might have kept you away before. A superb introduction to a fascinating new fantasy world. Can’t wait to see where in the world of Eora we get to go next.

    Gamereactor 8/10

"A new cult RPG (if a bit too much homage/conservative, would be great with some more own risks while keeping the classic style)"

    Escapist - 5/5

Bottom Line: It's the best new, isometric RPG to come out in years.

Recommendation: While Pillars of Eternity is certainly banking on a nostalgic fan base, it's still an excellent RPG in its own right. It's a game rich with player agency, giving you tons of control to craft your story or explore different solutions to the presented problems. You know, actual roleplaying not simply a game with a leveling and stat system stapled on.

    PC Games (GE) - 91/100

    IGN (RU) - 10/10

    Everyeye (IT) - 9.3/10

    IGN (IT) - 9.4/10

    PCGamesN - 10/10

Obsidian had a daunting task before them: to make a spiritual successor to a series of games that are inextricably tangled up in nostalgia, over a decade after the height of those games’ popularity. This is not the Baldur’s Gate of 2015, it’s Baldur’s Gate, Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale, the best parts of the lot of them wrapped up in something new and brilliant. And before you venture forth, don’t forget to gather your party.

For some reason loads of sites gave DA2 insanely hight scores. It was quite bizarre and smelt quite fishy.

For the second time I forgot I didn't back this on Kickstarter and was wondering why I wasn't getting an update with a code on it. Rookie error!

I'm still only about 65% of the way through Divinity, and only a few hours into this. So far though, Divinity has the edge.

There are multiple difficulties, with the easiest one being designed for anyone who like yourself hasn't played anything like it before.

I actually found Divinity to be slightly disappointing in the end, not to say though it was not a great game, have only been playing this a few hours but thoroughly enjoying it so far, really brings me back to a time when great games like this where being released every few months.

Hard to say, I'm playing with a Wizard PC and a Wizard NPC, plus one meat-shield you can get by the tree in the first settlement. Generally, playing magic users is a bit of a trial in the early levels, but its been okay. That said, the game isn't easy - to get to the first settlement I pretty much had to keep running, and any time I left the path I ran into a group of enemies I couldn't handle with the party I had available then. I'm now in the first dungeon, under the ruined temple in Gilded Vale, and generally its fine but there is two encounters there that kicked my ass. One (Wisps) I managed to beat basically by luck. The second (4 melee charging en-masse) kicked my ass, and as yet I cant beat it with just the one meat shield. I'm going to have to hire a merc from the inn so I get enough time to wear them down with the wizards.

I'm playing on Normal - picking a melee orientated PC or just going for easy will probably make it a bit more straightforward.

    I'm sticking with Easy.

I've no shame in it. I've played all the IE games to death but these days I just don't have the time to slog and micro-manage through constant battles. I'm really soaking up the atmosphere and nostalgia of this title and intend avoid getting bogged down in challenging encounters and focused on enjoying the story. dialogue and experience.

Just playing it on normal, easy is a bit to easy. like in baldurs gate but so far its not as brutal as baldurs gate havent been over run by giblings just yet. I started as one of those cipher guys as a godlike thingy but it was a bit squishy then i picked a druid but his spells were all aoe and i had a huge amount of int and the aoe was massive and kind of anoying so then i rolled a fighter fish guy who dual wields, im assuming at some stage you get to choose a dual spec like you could in the old games. Enjoying it so far. took me about 10 minuets to kill one guy at a bandit camp, he did no dmg to me and i did little dmg to him :pac:

Nah, thats defeatist talk. Though I did go to the Inn and came back 5 minutes later with a Rogue mercenary and beat the crap out of that encounter. With the 4th party member the encounter was actually fairly routine.

I will say one thing though - Wizards are a bit underpowered so far compared to BG magic users. For one thing, most of the spells are combat only so you cant use the Rogue to scout enemy locations, and then bounce a fireball down the corridor. You can only start the spells once the enemy is rushing into melee, by which point your tank is in the way (or needs to be) so pretty much any AoE spell is going to be a fairly weak choice as its just not going to be applicable in most scenarios. Who knows - the BG low level spells were pretty muck as well. Here is hoping they copied Melfs Minute Meteors from BG2. I absolutely loved using that spell with 3 or 4 magic users just murdering enemies in short order.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,616 ✭✭✭✭Sand

I take back what I said about Wizards and the low level AoE spells being muck. They're awesome, I just wasn't using them correctly.

Standard operating procedure is for the Rogue to go on, scout out the room and the enemies. The two wizards setup outside, but close to the door. Rogue exits the room - Warrior goes in to aggro the enemies, bravely runs away back to the Wizards. Wizards drop double barrelled AoE damage spells on the door as the Warrior runs through and past the AoE - enemies run straight into the AoE as it triggers a second or two later and die horribly. The Warrior and Rogue run back in to finish off any survivors with the Wizards using Arcane Assault to assist.

Based on the early enemies, fire seems the best damage type as its almost always one of the weaker DRs for enemies.

Bought this game based on recommendations and I have to say I'm really disappointed.

1: The difficulty is far too high. I wasn't able to get out of the first dungeon because a trap killed my entire party. I would at the very least expect a quick time event when you stand on a trap to avoid all damage.

2: No season pass. DLC is going to be expensive without the savings granted by a season pass. From what I've seem they haven't even planned any DLC.

3: Multiplayer is bugged. I was stuck playing on my own because the drop in-drop out multiplayer wasn't working.

4: Tried rebinding controls to my xbox controller but it's not supported. Forces you to play with mouse and keyboard. What is this 1998?

5: No achievements. I think this is inexcusable for a game in 2015.

I'm going to uninstall and go play dragon age 2. Much better game because it has sweet graphics and I don't have to think so hard when I play it.
