I definitely agree that they need to pick a target audience and stick with it. A few years ago, people might have bought tickets because there were 3 or 4 bands that they liked on the bill, but nowadays very few people will spend €200+ if there's only 3 bands they like, especially as there's a high chance that two will be on at the same time or that all three will be on different days.

If they don't want to limit themselves to a single genre, they could do it on a smaller scale- book a few bands of a similar genre/with a similar fanbase and put them all on the same stage and the same day. So maybe on Day 1, there'd be a Rock stage and a Radio-Pop stage (they don't have to be named either, I just mean having 5 or 6 similar acts on) and on Day 2, an Indie stage and a Dance stage, as well as maybe one more stage for new/Irish acts. That kind of thing. I know I'd be more likely to buy a day ticket to see 6 bands I like than a weekend ticket to see 3 I like and a ton I half-know of.

I noticed last year (2011) that because Beyonce was on the main stage later in the day, the crowd was awful for Manic Street Preachers and Slash, as it was mainly Beyonce fans waiting in the pit, bored and annoyed by people who were jumping/dancing/screaming along. It was fairly off-putting if you were there for any of the other bands that day, because some of the people around you clearly weren't impressed - and that might put me off going again, if my favourite band were sandwiched between two pop acts or something. Specialising the stages or choosing a target market would make it a more enjoyable experience for all, and might attract more music fans than drinking fans.

Also I've noticed a few posters in this thread assuming that all "young" Oxegen-goers are scumbags and that what they need is an older audience. That's a generalisation, and an unfair one at that. There are 50-year-old skangers and 20-year-old genuine music fans too, you know.

(Sorry about the wall of text!)

Yea i remember watching MSP and you could see the band were not really into it and ive seen them twice before (Oxegen 08 and the olympia few weeks before Oxegen) and they were brilliant , but tbh i would'nt really blame them because as you said everyone in the pit was just in to wait for Beyonce and i just felt sorry for the band . Again same thing with Slash , i ended up having to leave because of the crowd , the band themselves were savage but all everyone around me were just chatting, sitting , no atmosphere so i left and went to see Jimmy Eat World on the 2nd stage who ended up have a ****ty sized crowd which is a sham.

Also agree with the generalistion about all the scumbags etc being all the young people. Ive been to many gigs where people of all ages have acted like scumbags etc

I've never been to Oxegen and to be honest have never really wanted to based on the horror story's. I can see where people are coming from though, it is amazing how different festival goers on these islands are compared to festival goers in say Belgium. The Rock Werchter crowd is so much more relaxed and accommodating than anything I've seen at a British or Irish festival.

Someone mentioned making Oxegen more like Isle Of Wight? We were there this year, for the 3 headliners, and although the headliners were excellent the rest was pretty much awful. The layout is shocking, travel across the island poor and variety of food minimal at best. Add to that an over reliance on pop acts and you get a lot of drunk kids running about complaining about the headliners and a lot of slightly older people not bothered about every other act. If they want to make Ocegen successful in any way they must figure out what their target audience is. Glastonbury is great in theory but its the huge scale, variety on offer and clientele that makes Glastonbury what it is, you will struggle to get anything like it in Ireland

If it does come back, it should be a 2 day festival like it was pre 08, and prices need to go down.

Yea i think Ireland does need another festival agains EP . Id be happy with Oxegen just doing the mainstream acts as said above and then have other gigs like Hard Rock Calling/Hyde Park just one day gigs like the PP gigs this year with bands like Pearl Jam, Green Day 4 or 5 support acts and no camping

What are the chances of bon iver hitting oxegen 2013?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,109 ✭✭✭MaxSteele

I've been at the last three Oxegens, and after the last one in 2011, I swore and still swear I'll never go back to that dump.

One bloke with us was bottled with a Bulmers bottle in the face. Required stitches right from his forehead, across his nose, down to his cheek. Told us he was screaming crying when the doctors were stitching his hanging skin back on. And this same man has done time in prison too. Rotten.

One girl was raped right across from us, led away by emergency services and the Xbox stage had multiple stabbings on the sunday night after Coldplay.

It's just a knackerfest now unfortunately. The days of Witness and good festival music have been replaced with scumbags and ****e, generic chart music.

I read somewhere that they are going on a break after the current tour so it could be a couple years at least before they are back playing live together, if they get back together at all.

if Oxegen does come back I'd be very surprised if there is camping. A two day event with no camping is the way to go to to decrease problems me thinks.

    No, no they ****ing shouldn't . . .
Leave them **** dance/pop acts somewhere else!

And bring The Strokes, Jack White, The Cribs, Morrissey, QOTSA and maybe put some heavy band in this year in replacement for **** pop

It still haunts me to this day that I didn't see Daft Punk in 2007. If they return, I would too

The "horror stories" about Oxegen where always very exaggerated, blown up in the media. The crowd is a bit Knackery but what do you expect, Promoters can't exactly not let them in!

I have worked at every single Oxegen, and I assure you the stories are not exaggerated, in the slightest, not nearly half the horror stories that occur there get out, I wouldnt let my sister step foot in the place, it was a black hole of trouble. Got gradually worse from year one

They should definately reduce the number of stages. 2011's line-up had too much filler and all the good acts were on at the same time. I found that we had nothing to see till after 5pm most days. 2/3 stages with a good line-up ( have a dance stage, main stage and another a smaller stage for the smaller acts)

I've been goin to at least 2 festivals a year for the last 8 years with plenty of gigs in between and i can safely say that Daft Punk at Oxegen was the best live show I've ever witnessed. The encore blew me away!! still get goose bumps at the thought of it..

There would need to be an announcement pretty soon to get some of the Christmas market. Otherwise I can't seeing it going ahead.

If there is going to be a Oxegen they will wait for awhile to allow for Slane to be the main focus leading up to Christmas

Yea seen that they are around Europe , hopefully not but i wont be shocked if they get announced . I think we will know if Oxegen is happening if you see TITP announce 1 or 2 headliners and then MCD announces one of them for a non Oxegen gig then it prob wont happen . Unless they are moving the date to work with a different festival

You can be 90% sure Muse wont be there since they said last night at the o2 they were playing the Aviva in the summer.

Did they say this? I recall them saying they would be back next year, didn't hear anything about the Aviva

Didn't hear it myself over all the screaming at the end, but loads of people on the Muse message board and muselive.com are saying Matt said they'd be back next summer and then Dom said "yeah, in the good old aviva".

From 4:08 onwards Matt seems to hope for an Aviva date "if they are big enough". would be awesome

I also made the rookie mistake of seeing the Killers instead. What I would do to go back...

KOL are headlining a festival in Portugal the second weekend in July which is usually the same weekend as Oxegen.

Worth noting Depeche Mode are also headlining that festival. Nothing for sure but could be a good indicator of who'll play.
