Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    You really think so?
The thought of having to go through college would have sent me into a life of drinking also.

Getting drunk's often fun when you're young, but once you get over thirty then the hangovers last all day and that takes the joy out of it.

You guys all need to grow a set of testicles and stop whinging about hangovers! Hangovers are fantastic in my opinion because everyone stays away from me for the whole day for fear that they may feel the wrath of the negative creep. Some of the best days I've had are when I was hungover, seriously.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,453 ✭✭✭Shenshen

Well, I enjoy a glass of beer or wine. But I never drink more than 2 in an evening. I find that once I have more, the fun goes out of it, I start feeling annoyed and sick as well as tired, and will feel like dying all of the next day.
So I suspect that enjoying alcohol is all about how much you actually drink.

People in Ireland assure me that I'm not drinking anywhere near enough, but they have yet to convince me of the desirability of throwing up in public and debilitating headaches.

I grew a set of testicles ages ago, but I still hate hangovers.

So far what I'm getting from the responses in this thread is "I'm a boring **** who can't have fun unless I'm piss faced".

It's a bit ridiculous that taking this drug is almost mandatory if you want to make friends while taking less harmful drugs such as MDMA, LSD and Cannabis is socially stigmatized.

I would say that most of Irish society is addicted to alcohol without realizing it.

The consumption of alcohol has, on occasion, resulted in women allowing me to penetrate them. Therefore, i'm in favour.

Im 20 drunk a nice bit when I was 17/18 and gave up about a year ago completely. I just thought it was so sad people needed drink to enjoy themselves. I once asked someone who was at a house gathering(not really a session) how would you night have differed if you didnt drink those 2 bottles of wine, all I got was an I dunno,

Yeah everyone is addicted and doesn't realise it until they try and stop , anyone on this who drinks more than 3 times a week try and stop for a month and see how you get on and then you'll realise your hooked , and I'm a drinker but pull it back because it recks my head and im unproductive for the next 24hours.

my life is infinitely better without it,
but then I used to drink like a man possessed and swallow truck-loads of drugs to boot.
Now not feeling hungover all the time is a euphoria all in itself, I believe 'high on life' is the phrase, which sounds like an absolute crock of sh1t, but its true !!
but each to their own, im not gonna preach, would be way too hypocritical, given my past.

I would like to argue back but honestly: make friends with people who aren't idiots instead. It's easier in the long term.

and how did you overcome not drinking & drugs?

    No it's not.

In moderation it's brilliant, but most people either simply can't or don't want to drink in moderation.

I love beer, love wine, don't like getting out of my head drunk though.

I reached a point where I genuinely didnt want that life anymore.
Everything seemed fine on the outside, had a decent job, apartment etc. but on the inside I was barely keeping it together.
Every working week was a struggle against depression, anxiety, lethargy, due to coming down from a monster 48hour weekend session of drinking and pills, and just when I start to feel normal its friday and go out and do it all again.
After a decade of that I finally realized that its no way to live, thankfully.

There's a whole world out there, get out and live it.

Drink is fine in moderation. I do believe that the government should put a 1 euro levy on each unit sold in order to offset the health costs associated with its abuse.

That is ridiculous. Bottles of decent (or any) beer would double in price. Fucck that, it's already expensive enough as it is here.

That's the first semi-plausible explanation as to why Irish women drink such extraordinarily vast amounts ofalcohol compared to practically everywhere else. There's just no ther way they could suffer Irish men otherwise.

Thats because of the nature of the effects it has. A few pints is fine and all ya need. But after a few pints your not gonna be thinking I'm grand now I'll go home. Your gonna be more inclined to keep drinking.

Thats where the drinking responsibly argument falls down imo. Your not very likely to be thinking responsibly when your drunk. All the talk and good intentions before hand becomes redundant when you have a belly full of grog.

So everything is fine in moderation but moderation isnt what people think it is. Drinking in moderation is never getting drunk because if your drunk your in no condition to make responsibly decisions.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,351 ✭✭✭NegativeCreep

I think what's meant by moderation isn't going out every weekend and having a few but going out less often and having as much as you want. I'd go out once a month or so and drink as much or as little as I want whereas a lot of people seem to go out every weekend and get slaughtered!

Depends how much "a few" actually is. If it's one or two, maybe three, there's no problem. If you're drinking enough to become unable to make responsible decisions, well, that's not responsible drinking. Simples.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,301 ✭✭✭Daveysil15

It's different for everyone though. Some people may get drunk after just 2 pints if they don't have much of tolerance for it. Others could drink 5 or 6 pints and be perfectly fine.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,351 ✭✭✭NegativeCreep

Yet ya never see a responsible drinking campaign that focuses on anything other than people getting sloshed. People think responsible drinking is not getting sloshed, they still get drunk yet think they are drinking responsibly because they are not completely hammered and avoided the double vodkas.

Diagio doesnt do anything to dissuade this view either as they dont want to. They show the effects of WAYYYYY too much drink, they gloss over the effects of what people mostly believe is an ok amount, main effect being it throws your ability to make responsible decisions out the window and sets ya on the road to ruin.

I think men in their 30s and 40s actually spend less time in the pub than our fathers generation did, the beer belly is disappearing and younger men are more conscious of their health IMO.

I doubt this, we drink far far more as a nation than we did 20, 30, 40 years ago.

I have rose wine and I'm writing a smutty fanfiction. The wine greases up the lug-nuts, so to speak. Having said that, Erdinger Pikantus currently had me in the grips of a fierce hangover this morning. I only had 4 bottles but with an alcohol content of 7.3%, it knocked my socks off.
Still doesn't put me off. My aunt lives next to a great offie that sells some real avant-garde beers. I spotted one last night with a content of 10.5% and a Ralph Steadman-style label so if you have to peel me off the floor following Ocktoberfest, that'll be the reason why.

I would say that most of Irish society is addicted to alcohol without realizing it.

Wasn't there a really dangerous bad batch of MDMA surfacing around Cork last week? Those two lads in Kinsale died after taking it. At least with alcohol you know what's in it (sugar, barley, sulphur etc.) and the content of alcohol you're drinking, and you can be certain one bottle of beer is not going to potentially kill you on a night out. Can you really say the same for MDMA when you have no way of knowing what has gone into it?

Alcohol isn't the best thing ever when one takes into consideration all the negatives it has. But it's incorrect to completely blame just the substance - do the people consuming it have to take no responsibility for their actions? No one forced them to down 2 or 3 naggins on a night out, they chose to do this. I'm not preaching as I often drink excessively myself. If alcohol wasn't such a taboo in so many families I don't think the binge drinking problem we have in Ireland would be so severe. I know countless of my friends whose parents had an iron fist with them over drinking before they turned 18 are now some of the heaviest most excessive drinkers since they're legal to buy drink themselves.
