Even TG4 and TV3 is going into HD very soon.

And still, the level of broadcast from both of them from a HDTV could be???????????

You can still think about that one for yourselves. :D:D:D

"Full HD" 1080p is just the latest step in electronics companies taking your cash by deliberately drip-feeding new tech to the market. First it was ordinary plasmas, then hd ready, then lcd, then back to plasma, then 1080p, then led, then 3d.
4k can already be bought for serious money-expect the mass-market versions to be released in the next 12 months. Apparently this will be indistinguishable from film so I may consider finally getting a projector then.
It's not so much a marketing plan to make as much money as possible as much as it is technological limitations. If someone had invented an affordable super-thin LED TV with excellent colours and excellent response to motion back when HD began to kick off, they would have dominated the market for years on end. It simply hasn't been possible up until now to provide Full HD TVs with excellent display that don't cost in excess of €5000.

Everyone wants to sell the most in their market segment. They start off by an innovation or new feature that no other product has. Once the market gets saturated with products containing that feature, certain manufacturers start reducing their price to increase their market share. Then the cycle repeats.

TV3 can't get even standard definition right, all overlit and washed out. No wonder everyone including Vincenzo and Martin the Wacky Weatherman wears so much slap they look like clowns.

Fúck knows what TV3 HD would look like, perhaps something like this:

I got one because it was a reasonably cheap (€500) way of getting a nice big screen to watch shit on. I was quite taken with the motion interpolation too, which I know a lot of people hate, but I don't watch soap operas so it doesn't remind me of one. :)

I never bought one, my TV is 1976 and it is the dogs bollicks, I can turn the color way up and it is super vibrant, when I am watching nature shows the grass looks fantrippy green, the cows come in from the field just to lick the screen,

they swear it produces more milk.

Have you tried sniping in COD on an SDTV?

Reason number 1 right there :p

Most people have consoles,or laptops, its easy to connect in thru hdmi.OLD
sdtvs ,tend to have curved screens, and hdtvs take up less space,
the new digital, terrestials channels will look better on a hdtv.
i would,nt like to be watching dvds on an old crt, tube tv.
32 inch tvs are now quiet cheap, around 300 euros.
And now tvs will come with 3d modes, and apps, youtube, netflix ,etc built in , and you,ll be able to install new ones .
of course theres always ,early adopters that paid 2grand for a 32inch tv.
i always wait a few years for the price to fall,on the latest gadget.
A 32 INCH 720p tv would be fine for most people, unless you have a subscription for
    sky movies.
i,d say most people dont know you can watch tv in hd without paying a sub to sky.
they have a hdtv connected to a skybox thru a scart cable, ,or they have a nonhd skybox.

Even when programs and sports are in 720 compared to the standard channel version there is no comparison.

P.S. I find sound to be a huge difference, which i never realised before getting it, watching sport its like the crowd are in the room.

Nothing is in HD!!! Given how long HD has been around I thought a few programs a week would be in HD but nope, nada. Unless you are a millionaire and can afford to have Sky HD.

For the rest of us, buying a HD tv was a complete fcuking waste of money.

    Sick of it.

    Playing the ps3
Using it as my computer monitor
    Watching blu ray movies
RTEHD for sports can't even be compared to the SD transmissions of games

I know exactly what I bought my HD TV for - maybe you should have done more research beforehand though if there's literally no benefit in HD for you

I've been on Sky HD for about 2 years now & I can admit that I couldn't watch a game now without it being in that format - Sound & picture is mind-blowing & the odd film that I do watch falls under the same bracket.

Super HD is in trial now.... that'll need a new tv too unfortunately.

Bought mine for Xbox 360, stream JD Netflix on it, download hd stuff online and watch it.

HD trumps SD hands down, best thing to happen to consumer television in my lifetime and gaming also

Its only myself but watching a Blu-ray in FULL HD, for me is such a pleasure at times.

The TV stations are not taking full advantage of full HD - I think (could be wrong) some are yet not able to.

1080p uses a lot of bandwidth to deliver a good quality picture, you'd be looking at about 30Mb/s at least. This is why broadcasters use 1080i. Despite that, most are now greedy with their HD bit rates and this even makes the HD picture look ropey. But it's still better than the woefully low bit rate on the SD feed.

Happy days watching German television... approx. 50 HD channels and a sky subscription for 34.90€ including all programme packages and HD!

However, playing videogames on PS3 and Xbox wouldn't be nearly as good on a SD tv

I watch gaa in HD. RTE's bitrate might not be the best but you can actually see the sliotar when watching hurling now, for that alone it was worth it for me :)

I got mine because it seemed to be at a reasonable price at the time. Especially after lots of price slashing that happened 3 1/2 years ago. Sure, do they even sell "SD" TV's any more?

The bitrate for i vs p transmission from the same source is basically the same, p has half the field rate of i with twice the detail, so it evens out. The reason i is generally the choice for broadcast seems to be for supporting old CRTs and keeping the price of set top boxes down.

If you want to show off what HD can do then just slap on a BBC documentary, looks stunning.

Have a big ol' plasma myself and love it, the colours and picture are flawless when you're watching from the right source.

Anyways, a HTPC to the TV is the right job.

It all went to hell when CRTs were phased out! Perfectly good screen tech replaced by poorer LED/LCD nonsense.

Freesat has just 5 HD channels and only 4 of them are likely to be watched (NHK is a bit esoteric).

So you don't want Sky in HD, and you don't want ITV, BBC or RTE in HD because they are sh1te.

Why do you have a TV at all?

I don't want to pay the insane prices that sky charges, theres a difference
Its only e15 extra a month for HD. Well worth it. Well i watch national geographic and the pictures are amazing. Well worth 15 yo yos.

170 smackers a year might be quite a lot for posher telly esp when you can buy a HD freesat PVR for that much. . That's about 3 weeks of ciggies for many!

Some of those CRTs are almost family heirlooms,we had one for over thirty years.

What people don't realise is that HD isn't just the visuals, there's also proper audio if you connect your satellite box/HTPC/PS3/Xbox to a surround system. I've stopped using the crappy speakers on the TV. When TV's went to flatscreen the sound went to crap because they had no room for decent speakers

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,520 ✭✭✭allibastor

I bought a 42 inch Hd telly the week after i got my xbox 360 and realized that the games looked rubbish until i got the new telly. best purchase ever. playing skyrim in HD. now that was worth the money alone

CRT TVs had a high refresh rate but were feckers to repair and recycle. Eyes would be fùcked from staring at CRT monitor for too long, I was glad flatscreens replaced them.

I remember I had an argument with a girl who was adamant that CRTs were phased out as a corporate conspiracy to "sheeple".

Then again, she did think that the dangers about ray tubes was bullshìt and that the problems in recycling them were a lie. It was mentioned on a horrible YouTube video so it was 110% true :pac:

Only thing I don't like about flatscreens is their sound quality, doesn't leave a lot of room for decent speakers so you're left with a thin sound. Still, basic 2.1 speakers do the job.

HD is brilliant imo, you really notice how crap SD is when you get used to it. Its especially good for sport.

Most channels I watch are HD: All the SkySports channels, ESPN, Sky1 and most of the other entertainment channels all the documentary channels like Discovery, history etc all the sky movie channels, RTE2, BBC and itv etc etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 301 ✭✭VictorRomeo

My HD TV is connected to a home theatre receiver with 7.2 surround sound. Sources connected are Sky HD box, PS3, BluRay player and a Boxee media streamer. The picture and audio quality is superb and utterly immersive. Sky is used primarily by my missus for her stuff and by me for sports. I use the Boxee to stream the content I'm interested in and we watch a bluray every other day.

If you've bought a HDTV and connect nothing but SD, SCART devices or shock horror rabbit ears up to it, you've nobody else to blame but yourself.

Knowledge is key. Content is king.
