Fourth official taking notes on what Shelvey possibly said to SAF.

Hahaha did anyone else see Fergie's sly smile at Shelvey after he left to go down the tunnel? Brilliant :D

Utd have been utterly terrible, if fergie doesn't make the necessary changes I can still see Liverpool causing us big problems even with 10 men.

It's almost like we are playing with 1 midfielder! Liverpool strolling thru at their leisure.

Both Nani and Valencia are either contributing negatively to te game or not at all. Kagawa not getting any balls in to feet and RVP has probably touched the ball 3 or 4 times if even that.

Our wingers usually save us when the midfield is incompetent but not today.

Ferdinand and Rafael having very good games, everyone else is just muddling through.

To their credit, Liverpool are playing very well and deserve to be in front.

So so disappointing from Fergie and many of the players

Sky trying too hard to be impartial, Evans did nothing wrong to my eyes. Well, until the acting afterwards.

Are you insane? Two footed tackle, studs up. That's usually a red. And I' a united fan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,710 ✭✭✭✭Paully D

Looking at the red card again I wonder is the fact Shelvey got up straight away and Evans stayed down what swayed the refs decision? If Shelvey had stayed down too I wouldn't have been surprised to see no action would have been taken.

Harsh red IMO as you could easily make a case for Evans to be sent off too. I thought it was a good, hard, committed challenge with both players going for the ball, but these days I guess players should know if they go in like that they run the risk of a red card. Years ago that type of challenge would have been praised.

I was hoping for a good game of football today, obviously asking too much.

Gas that people are arguing against that red card, but it's to be expected I suppose. Anyway, I expect the ref will "even it out" in the second half with a soft penalty and Liverpool will win 1-0.

    Rubbish match.

If Jonjo had stayed big then Evans would be off :o

Good game potentially ruined by a rash decision from Halsey.

You can see why he sent him off though and its the one tackle that looked in real time rather then replays which is strange in these circumstances.

Jesus Evans as a question to answer aswell.

Both players went to protect themselves.

I thought they both went in to mill eachother out of it...

Red and Red. Both of them. Both over the top, both had studs.

But the ref was conned by the tears of Evans. He pretended to get hurt, and the ref bought it. I feel bad for liverpool. Both teams should have 10men

He's just been sent off for a reckless challenge and he starts having a go at Ferguson. He should keep his head down and get off the pitch.

I agree, a young lad in the heat of the moment though.....just let him off, why provoke something....honestly

So surely, by that reckoning, Evans should have went too

Personally, I think there's a slight difference between Evans who, while out of control, wasn't going in over the top. That makes a pretty big difference for me in terms of recklessness, but if Evans had missed the ball, I'd have expected him to get sent off.

I also think that photo shows the tackle about a half second after when it actually occurred.

He played the ball, he didn't lunge towards a player. Still images aren't evidence in this case. :pac: Shouldn't have been a red for Shelvey, just looked a lot worse from some angles.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,202 ✭✭✭el dude

Yeah United have been awful. I've never seen them give the ball away so cheaply so often, especially on the counter attack where they're normally so precise.

Still, expecting nothing other than a United win from here.

Evans tackle was much worse. Both feet with both sets of studs showing vs shelvey with one foot side footed. What a shocking disgraceful decision.

Gutted at the sending off as it was such a good performance. We can't catch a break.

    Fergie better watch out :pac:

He went in with all studs showing and was off his feet. That is a red. You can have all of the slight differences you want. You red one, you should red the other.

Looking at the tackle again, Evans should have been sent off as well. Both went in the same way and Jonjo was the one who actually won the ball.

Yeah it could be. Evans took one to the leg and came off worse but you would have to imagine the referee has saw Shelvey's studs come up near the top of Evans' leg and that has decided it.

You could make a case for Evans to be sent off too.

Don't understand how if one was sent off, the other wasn't. Both went in studs open, if anything Evans was the only one with both open and off the floor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,883 ✭✭✭smokedeels

Shelvey's earlier tackle on Rafael - while not even a yellow - had an intensity that made it look worse on first viewing.

It's the same with the Evans tackle... it's a yellow when you watch it over again, but he goes in with a needless ferocity that initially makes it look much worse.

Still, I really don't buy the idea that Evans was over selling the impact, it very likely hurt.

I'm pretty sure shelvy punched Fergie in the face on the way down the tunnel, and prob shot a kitten.

I wouldn't say Evans was faking personally. The contact on his leg looks sore to me.

Obviously, intent is supposed to be important here so just because Evans was hurt shouldn't mean he gets red and Evans gets nothing.

First I thought, red, then I thought yellow and now I think the only difference was one man got hurt and the other didn't.

But the pic does mean something. Both connected with eachother with their studs. Both over the top of the ball. Both should be sent off

Liverpool fans don't have a leg to stand on with the Shelvey red card so they try to justify it with ''Well, Evans should have gone too.''

    Lol no.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 41,926 ✭✭✭✭_blank_

that single freeze frame photograph, showing a split second of time proves nothing at all.

Also, lol at Leiva. The ref hasn't "ruined" anything, if it had been Evans off, and not Shelvey, you wouldn't be playing that tune.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,407 ✭✭✭✭LuckyLloyd

Shelvey came in over the top. It's a red card. It's harsh but it's a red now.

What a stupid thing for Shelvey to do as he went off too.

    A3evtewCQAALm_Y.jpg

See that buddy? See it, that picture? Who is more deserving of a red? In fact, don't answer, no point.

Ahh go away will ya. Be man enough and admit both players were out of control and both should have walked away with yellows

    2 very interesting substitutions.

I'd say Fergie tore strips out of Nani.

Yeah, I'd agree pictures mean nothing in the context of this debate. It would be easy to move it on a frame or two or back a frame or two, and the entire tackle would look different.
