Anyone know what's wrong with RTE?

Just switched it on for a Murder She Wrote Marathon & it's on the blink

It better be back for Nationwide or I'll be writing a strongly worded letter to Arthur Murphy on Mailbag

    People still watch those?

Now that analogue has been switched off isn't also time to switch off the careers of the old fogeys at rte and bring in some young blood.
Mary kennedy on again feck sake give someone else a chance, she's already on a teachers pension.

Did he just say that it is only built to take 8 more tv stations and 10 more radio stations?

Oh it's all setup to roll out pay-TV

despite being zero market for it, anyone who wants pay-TV already has UPC/cable/SKY

anyone who wants to run a pay TV service here has 3 options when it comes to UK FTA stations.

    1. don't carry them - you are now "topuptv" so may be first in the list to go if there is belt tightening

    2. carry them - this will take a full MUX, so twice the transmission bill and you've to pay some rights too before you start.
SKY do this in reverse it costs them money to carry RTE & Co. - very clever of sky to have one remote control the TV, they don't want you to have any reason to pick up another one.

    3. combo FTA box - your equipment and install costs go through the roof, you'll have to provide an EPG / satellite channel programming over the airwaves every time the satellite retunes

Option 1 leaves you with no hook,
Options 2 and 3 leave you with no margin , and UPC/SKY have deeper pockets than you do

Called out to my aunt to sort out saorview on the small tv in the kitchen and in her bedroom. A bit of fiddling and I got it sorted.

It turns out she has a HD TV and Sky+ HD in the living room to watch Coronation Street.

have a nose around here https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=55 to find out how to view Corrie for free on the SKY box,

tell her she can use the savings to buy you a nice christmas jumper

how to view Corrie for free on the SKY box,

    Here's a money saving tip:

You can get free to air you have a Sky box & dish. Just cancel your Sky subscription, pull the card out of the Sky box and all the FTA stations will come through.

Funnily enough, you will also still be left with the Sky Electronic Programme Guide. €300 a year saved in one go.

    Don't have a tv.

Everything on a tv can be had on a pc, so why bother?

    Poll needs another voting option.

For one thing, not everyone can get broadband with unlimited download.

RTÉ has a second multiplex (frequency) ready to go at all transmitters if the content becomes available, maybe early next year.

There are 4 further multiplexes available for licensing by the BAI for commercial DTT if required.

But none of the Irish Channels, you'll still need a saorview receiver.

Its amazing how the broadband rich seem to think everyone is as lucky as they are!

I'd reckon the number of people paying through the nose for non-premium channels is in the 10s of thousands in Ireland be it through SKY or UPC.

FTA(or freesat)/Soarview is the way to go.

More nonsense from the low to midband chattering classes. You should be happy with your 2MBs birthright, you digital pleb.

cba looking for the thread on it, but for some models you have to power it off too or put the card in upside down or wave a rubber chicken at it or something. nothing too complicated anyway.

Which reminds me , I'm still waiting on teh Setanta card...

I presume that you could still use the analogue tv monitors for watching videos, dvds and playing games on and even tellys with a usb port capability, you coud watch downloads from the internet. Streaming on the net has improved tenfold over the last 10 years, a decent laptop with good pc speakers is as good as a telly these days.

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

Depends where you live - a large portion of the country still doesn't have broadband.

well it can't though, can it?
lots of TV shows from smaller channels never make it on to the internet as no-one caps them, not to mention many live sports, unless you want to watch it in low resolution on some crappy streaming site.

You can watch almost any tv station live on the internet. You can watch all the Irish ones on www.aertv.ie. You can watch all the bbc's, channel 4, E4 etc. through certain apps and websites for free, (FilmOn on Android for one). Any major shows can be downloaded. The quality of streaming sites has completely changed in the last few years. I regularly watch footballs games at 2000KBs on Sopcast. The resolution is probably better than standard analogue UPC.

Of course I take the point that all of this is impossible without a good broadband connection.

For one BBC HD picture on iPlayer is not as good as Freesat HD or Freeview HD.

Is RTE 2 in HD online?

Yeah they have a HD option on Aertv anyway, as well as standard def. I never bother using it though because I have a Saorview TV and an old 'mystery cable' running into my apartment from somewhere with analogue UPC at the other end.

I actually meant better just in relation to streaming football from sopcast because that's the only time I really use it.

I don't need to visit the sticks, I have fresh air and high definition 3d forests streamed live into my living room via my 150MB UPC connection.

well goodbye analogue tv and goodbye to cross modulation distortion on TV3 on UPC analogue due to rte vhf signal:)

Oh wait I don't really watch TV3 that much! except for law & order SVU:D
