Advice appreciated (Development/Game PC)

Hi All,

I need to sort out a new computer fairly rapidly as college is resuming and I don't want to be forced to rely on the lab computers. Current computer isn't running Win7/Eclipse/Visual Studio/etc too nicely so need something better.

I've been looking on the dell site at things within my budget (€900) which seem good but then when you search the supplied individual parts such as the graphics card, the reviews aren't all that great.

I was advised to build my own. I'm a CS student and have some experience with hardware but I don't think I'd want to build it by myself, so am looking for it to be built, and am most certainly not confident in actually choosing parts.

Anyway, to fill out the form:

What is your budget? [€900]

2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Software Development, Gaming (COD, BF3, similar)

3. Do you need a copy of Windows? No

4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? No.

5. Do you need a monitor? No but I do intend on upgrading my current one in a year (1920x1080 current resolution)

6. Do you need any of these peripherals? No.

7. Are you willing to try overclocking? If it's done for me

8. How can you pay? Visa debit, bank transfer

9. When are you purchasing? Probably next week

10. If you need help building it, where are you based? Yes, south Dublin

What are your thoughts? Is it possible to get a good PC built, quickly, in that budget or am I better off just buying from Dell/Alienware?

Looks like a good build. I'd only make a few small changes.

The WD caviar green can be slow, its generally used as a backup drive or for media, It wouldn't be a great main drive. You'd be better off with a caviar blue if you're getting a HDD. But I'd highly recommend getting an SSD for your windows install if you can fit it in your budget. Makes a big difference to start-up/loading times.

Also, the motherboard has integrated 7.1 sound, so the sound card may be unnecessary.

Apart from that, looks good.

H77 chipset is not overclockable. If you do not want to overclock, then get a i5-3570 & save yourself 20 quid.

If you are not sure whether you want to overclock or not, then keep the i5-3750K & go for a motherboard with a Z77 or Z75 chipset so you have the option of OC in the future.

Also, Caviar blue is better thab caviar green, from what I have read. Good luck!

from reading these forums super-flower amazon is the recommened psu on boards usually, 1600 MHz ram is usually recommened also. whatever you order just make sure in the information box you have 4 green bars and it says ready for dispatch before you order or you could be like me stuck waiting for a part to come in

Cheers guys. 100% open to overclocking despite not knowing how to do it currently. As long as the system lasts a year I'm quite happy

Added 1600mhz ram, changed the green caviar 2tb to a 1tb blue and changed the power supply.

Is the 550W power supply sufficient?

i havent overclocked myself yet but from what people say its very easy. about the ram i should have been more specific low profile is probably better due to clearance room http://lb.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=48850&agid=1193 is what i ordered. i really cant answer on the wattage of the psu as i dont know. if your going to overclock you will need an aftermarket cooler http://lb.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=49134&agid=669 was recommended to me

Yeah I'm kind of at budget now so doing anything else to it will have to wait a month or two I suppose.

My only concern at the moment is the SSD. It says "Samsung 830 128GB NB Upgrade Kit". I chose that one because up until yesterday there was a "Samsung 830 128GB SSD Paper Box" but that quite literally disappeared. Now there's the "NB Upgrade Kit" or the "PC Upgrade Kit" but I'm not sure what to make of it.

They've Samsung 830 64GB SSDs, could put two in instead of the "NB Upgrade kit"?

They build it I assume.

OP, be warned, they've sent some shoddy assembly work to forum members before.

Yeah that's the build fee. I'm not *too* concerned so long as nothing is damaged. I could assemble it myself, truth be told, but having the option there is convenient. I'll pop it open and make sure everything is seated properly/undamaged when it arrives regardless.

Put through the order and sent payment this evening anyway so everything's in motion. Looking forward to getting it, like the spec and its upgradeability is very attractive so no complaints.
