I'm fully in favour of an overhaul of the motor tax system too, I wouldn't be in favour of halving the cc rates and expecting the folks on the emmissions system to pick up the tab though, in my view that wouldn't be equitable.

This is where we disagree, entirely.

You're not the most consistent :)
A hour or so ago you didn't think outright halving of rates works.

I highlighted too much apologies there.

What i meant was we need a stark realisation that the Carbon system is a load of fiddlers bits and needs to be raised and the CC lowered. Amounts to be decided. But I disagreed with you on the fact that you seem to think its stinging the people with ridiculously low tax by upping it to a reasonable level.

Realistically the cc rates won't be coming down imo, anything up to 2.0 isn't too unreasonable either taking into account inflation and the rates from the 80s and 90s. The emissions rates will no doubt increase sharply. I think anything over a grand is too much but I don't see that as being a shared view with those in charge.

people complain about the mostly low tax on the emission based system, what about the cars under 1L paying on E185 on the CC based system?

    Engine Capacity (c.c.) Annual
    Not over 1,000 185 102 52 15.41
    1,001 to 1,100 278 154 78 23.16
    1,101 to 1,200 307 170 86 25.58
    1,201 to 1,300 333 184 94 27.75

why such massive % jumps between 1000 and 1100 cc and then tiny between 1.2 & 1.3L? there is no logic to it. I reckon the 1L and under, should start at a decent bit higher and then have fixed amounts per every hundred cc. i.e maybe E300 for 1L & then E50 increment for every 100 cc...

Why? Why an increase every 100 ccm? I think the whole system is overcomplicated. All we need are three to five tax rates with closer gaps between them.

Really getting sick of these rediculous rates, there's no equality in it at all. I myself have a 2000 BMW 530D which I bought when I was working and had money, now that unemployed I cant afford to change it without a complete loss of money. The car is like brand new with all the money I've put in to it and now I'm expected to pay even more rediculous road tax for no viable reason!! For comparison Ive provided a link below for anyone that is interested, the emissions between a 2000 BMW 530D and a 2010 BMW 530D, both of which have similar emissions and yet mine costs over €1400 per year to tax while the new one costs a fraction of that!
I previously had a 1.4 Opel astra which was costing just as much on fuel and returning the same MPG.

Sorry if the answer to this is too obvious, but I'm taxing my car for December at the moment. Am I paying the old rate or the new one which was just announced in the budget?

    Thanks!

If it expired in November you should pay the old/2012 rates
