Just a reminder that there will be information on The Gathering available in Central Library, Lady Lane, today (Weds 19th) from 4.30pm to 7pm - why not drop in at some point and chat to Lynn, Mary or Vinnie.

Find out more about how you can play your part in The Gathering

The Irish Government has recently launched a national tourism initiative called ‘The Gathering’ for 2013. They are hoping to attract significant numbers of Irish Diaspora to Ireland during 2013. The Gathering’ is a simple but potentially very powerful initiative, where the Government is asking everyone in Ireland to reach out for one special year (2013) to family, relatives, alumni, affiliates, networks etc. and invite them to Ireland as part of an organised Gathering for a special year of celebration. Community groups and individuals throughout the country are being asked to organise festivals/ events next year and invite friends and relatives from overseas home to participate in these. This is very much a citizen led initiative. To find out more about how you or your organisation can be part of the Waterford Gathering 2013 a series of public information sessions will take place throughout the county. A panel of people will be available at these to answer any queries or discuss ideas/suggestions that you or your organisation may have on this initiative. Dates for public information sessions:

Waterford- Central Library, Lady Lane Wednesday September 19th 4.30pm-7.00pm

There will also be a public meeting in the Tower Hotel on Tuesday 2nd October at 7.30 - all are welcome

Here in Waterford we hope to play a very active role in helping deliver the ‘Waterford Gathering 2013’. Waterford County Council and Waterford City Council and have been asked to assist in co-coordinating Waterford’s Gathering Initiative. They have agreed a joint strategic approach which will include a joint promotional campaign. Information on how they intend promoting ‘Waterford Gathering Events 2013’ will also be available at this meeting.

More information on ‘The Gathering 2013 ‘ can be found on www.thegatheringireland.com . Further information on these public information sessions or on the Waterford Gathering can be obtained from Vinnie O’Shea, Waterford City Council on 051-849990 or by email voshea@waterfordcity.ie or Lynn Cahill at 051 849 759 or lcahill@waterfordcity.ie

To be honest this is all shiny on the outside, iv looked into this and it is encouraging people to create events but not a single extra euro has been allocated budget wise.

Thats completely unrelated. The gathering is essentially about bringing tourists in, notably those of Irish ancestry. Some of the recommendations are invite cousins/friends etc from abroad home for a bit. Even if its offering them them a bed/couch, you would be bringing in a tourist for a bit to spend money in economy. It aint rocket science

So we're to encourage people who weren't able to afford living here to come home and spend money. I hear a lot about do something to make this a success- most people I know who are abroad get home when they can but don't have much money to spend and can't stay that long. Seems to me something thought up of in an ivory tower.

Btw really like waterford library and the staff who are generally fairly helpful

More aimed at people who have been living away from Ireland for a long long time or have never been here. I don't think they are aiming to bring back people who only recently moved away.
