I had to google it as I've never heard of them (http://www.grannysstore.com/Wilderness_Survival/fire_pistons.htm)

    Don't see a huge benefit over a conventional fire-steal?

Yeah its kind of a firesteel with training wheels. You might be very grateful for the convenience if your hands were cold and wet though, or you needed a fire in a hurry.

they actually work very differently to a fire steel. I'd like one..

Interesting note, a young engineering student with the surname of deisel was shown one by a lecturer back from a foreign holiday, and it gave him a very big idea

Might try that myself. have a lathe and a box of o-rings from aldi at home but i'd almost want to see a shop bought one first before i'd chance making one

It relies on an airtight seal at the end of the piston, which is either jelly waxed string or a rubber o-ring. The string doesn't last that long, but the o-ring should do for a while. Eventually it'll succumb to friction however.

Link didn't work for me until I stripped the brackets out of your quoted link.

Bit dear from granny? Should be possible to make one up easily enough. Modify one of those stubby bicycle pumps you see in Aldi/Lidl for about €6?
