Hey there, I was just wondering has anyone done or know of anyone that had done a dog grooming course in Ireland? They only ones I found were as a distance learning course or a part time night course. There is one other, a one on one intensive course that covers things in a matter of weeks in a boarding kennels/ groomer called Crocodile dundees in Clare but I havent heard of anyone whos done it so was wondering if anyone had any recommendations. Im considering starting a grooming course next summer after I (hopefully) qualify as.a vet nurse if I manage to get through this year, I figure it'll be a very valuable skill and will boost up a cv a bit :)

    Where are you, OP?

St John's College in Cork do have an Animal Grooming course which is a two year one. Details here: http://www2.stjohnscollege.ie/courses-2/applied-sciences/animal-grooming-fetac-level-6/

EDIT: This is a one year FETAC Level 6 course. Think you have to have Level 5 first though. But you can e-mail the course co-ordinators for advice.

Im not looking for an animal care course, I will already be a qualified vet nurse and those kind of courses are usually used as stepping stones. Plus they dont cover much grooming.

Ive looked into the one in st johns before, from what a remember you could do it as a night course or something. I doubt I would have to do the first year as I would already have a level 7 degree, but to be honest I dont think I would have time to take out a whole year where I wont be working etc. I was hoping there might be one that can be done in maybe a month or 2 so come September I would have it done and could either start looking for work or continue on and get a higher degree with the vet nursing, because if I go back to do a lower level degree I would have to pay full fees and that, the government only likes to pay for progression, ie level 7 to 8 for me.

So maybe a kind of private course outside of the whole level/CAO system would be better. Maybe I should look into seeing if qualified groomers can give internships etc.. Am I just deluded or has anyone done any kind of intensive course?

Oh Im in Clare but can travel (within reason :P)

The course I outlined above isn't an animal care course! It's Animal Grooming which is separate. As you already have L7 animal care, then I would imagine they will let you do L6 on the AG side. It's done over a year.

I've never heard of intensive AG courses. Of course, it doesn't mean they don't exist. TBH I wouldn't place much store by them. It would be impossible to learn all aspects of grooming in just two months. Makes no sense to me.

I know a couple of dog groomer schools, one in Dublin and one in Bangor, I don't know if travelling that sort of distance is something you'd do?
One thing that strikes me about these courses... The PRICE of them! They are intensive and you get trained up pretty quickly, but still, several thousand euros? :-o

Sorry I was replying to the person above you who mentioned an animal care course. Couldn't quote with my phone. And I don't actually have a level 7 yet I'm in my final year of vet nursing at the moment, so I'm just theorizing, if I fail this year I might end up going back that route and doing the level 5/6 courses :P

DBB I know the prices can be crazy! It is hopefully going to be my present for my 21st birthday, along with my birthday and Christmas presents for the next 10 years apparently :P I will look into those that you mentioned though, I dunno about going there yet travel wise but we seem to have family in every corner in the country so if I end up going for something I would probably be shipped in with some distant cousins :P

Actually I was just looking up the one in Bangor, it says that they give reductions on price for people who are already qualified vet nurses or kennel owners or anyone who's done pet first aid. I might ring around a few closer places and see if they might offer the same thing. The one nearest to me is 3 grand, and while it's the cheapest, still waaay too much!

Check out Killester college, they do one, not sure if its intensive or over a few weeks or months, but someone I know started one in June and I think is now qualified?? She's working as a groomer anyway so I'd imagine so.

I might look into it, thanks! I just looked at the website and the only animaly (is that a word?!:P) thing is an animal care course that includes a grooming module, but I'm probably blind and can't see where it says it :D

I know COAPE do specialised courses for vet nurses and accounts towards CVE points. Not sure how recognised it is here though. Might be something to look into maybe if you wanted something a little more with your qualifications.
