Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi Guys,

I live in Germany and work in an office. After cracking open my third beer of the day, it got me
thinking how forward thinking and dynamic Germany is compared to Ireland.

Every Friday at 2pm we are offered beer. Most people only take one but being Irish I always
have at least 4 and shove a few in my bag for later.

I honestly feel that I'm at my most productive on a Friday afternoon and I know it's because I'm
    feeling more relaxed from alcohol.

I think Ireland should stop being so backwards and should introduce the same policy?

What's your opinion on getting tipsy at work? I think you become friendlier and happier and
to top it off, your ugly co-workers become more attractive.

    Cheers!

I suppose it depneds on your work, wouldn't like bus drivers to adopt this policy! For an office job , sounds good.
I'm quite often at my most productive the day after a night out (not a hangover day but when you're still a little bit tipsy)

Everyone you work with thinks you're a dipso. Not good.

They dont think I'm a dipso. i get really flirty when I drink so at worst they think I'm a slut.

    I can live with that.

Am drinking becks at work here too, it's a Friday thing. It's quite common in Australia, nearly everywhere does it on Fridays.

It wouldn't work. We don't know when to stop.

'Going for a pint' rarely ends with just 1 pint.

Signs and symptoms of alcohol abuse
Drinking as a way to relax or de-stress.

Maybe slutyness isn't the worst of your problems with drink... :o

Well why else would you drink? To feel more wound up and uptight?

Even light drinkers would agree it relaxs you...

Being a slut is not a problem either. It's a badge I wear with honour

As soon as it and 'three fiddy' become banned phrases. Soon, I'd wager.

We have booze in our fridge, although having to drive home I wouldnt take the chance to have one or two.

Some drink though and head straight to town after work.

Op says Ireland is backwards because of it's relationship with alcohol and then says that she enjoys Fridays most because the drink makes her feel more relaxed and that she takes 4 beers instead of 1. Am I the only one detecting a hint of irony in all of this?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 837 ✭✭✭Beetlebum

How is me taking advantage of free beer backwards?

Surely it shows that I'm a very clever opportunist with a thirst for beer?

people can chill out in the park and have a few cans, not over here though

no way.......you'd lose all your belongings at the end of a knife

Used to go for a pint most lunchtimes in London and on Friday we'd have 4 or 5 over a long lunch, it was great. I started a thread about it a while ago actually, it's a shame it'd never work here but I've found most Irish people feel they(or usually others...) couldn't be trusted to just have a couple.

Alcohol does tend to make people overestimate their own abilities and performance.

Well all my work is recorded and I'm top of the table so that speaks for itself.

I'm just happier when I'm drunk and work seems less tedious so I lash through it.

I might take up drinking before work from Monday onwards

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,406 ✭✭✭Pompey Magnus

Out of interest how does work deal with the potential presence of employees trying to recover from alcohol abuse considering the high level of alcoholism in Germany, a recent study indicate 5-10% of the Austian and German workforce being either alcohol dependant or at risk of becoming so.

Putting at-risk people in a room full of people consuming alcohol seems a bit backward and cruel to me so I assume they must have considered this, is there half day Friday or extended lunch option for employees?

I'm fairly sure it's against the law to be intoxicated in work in Ireland.
