Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Changing OS

    Hi All,

I'm toying with the idea of changing the OS on my netbook to Linux and am looking for a bit of advice on the matter.

Firstly, I've no experience with this kind of thing at all and am very wary of trying this at all. How difficult is it to actually do? Obviously I've a bit of research to undertake! Are there any reasons I should/should not do this?

I've been contemplating it for a while but now my other laptop is banjaxed and now I've no way of using my (old) printer as my netbook only has Windows 7 starter on it which doesn't support the printer driver.

I could buy a new printer but I sort of feel like that is a waste of a perfectly good printer.....maybe I'm too attached.

Or I could upgrade the Windows OS at a cost of €75....which I'm not inclined to do.

Any reasons for/against changing the OS by an IT novice (so novice that I'm not even sure this is the right place to post this!) would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,
    BH

Ubuntu is pretty simple to install, you'll probably want to dual boot the machine first, and i'm yet to find a printer that ubuntu doesn't support

If you want to go Linux, then do it. ;)

Your netbook doesn't have an optical drive so you'll need something like UNetbootIn to make a USB stick or SD card bootable with the ISO of your Linux flavour.

    Ubuntu is definitely the solution.

One thing to watch out for: If its a Dell netbook, you're likely to run into driver problems for the wireless card.
3rd party drivers can be got, and work just fine. Getting them can be an issue if it doesn't have an ethernet port.
