I think it's to position the images so they're tied together as they're loosely connected, like Paul Newman is shaking the branch and the woman at the whiteboard for example.

Funny GIFs II has slowed to a crawl for me recently. 40 posts/page is a bit much for that thread.

The only reason they're doing it that way is they're spaced too far apart to cross arms, because of the layout of the stage they can't move close together either(unless half the line moves in one way).
