Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Since when is the Americas two separate continents...?

The position of the cursor is keeping the controls present over the video and its annoying the viewer.

Ah, I thought the person in the right-hand side panels was the one controlling the mouse. Makes sense now

    since when were they not?

far more separated than Europe and Asia will ever be...

    From wikipedia.

As you can see there can be between 4 and 7 continents listed. Interestingly in each case Antarctica is listed.

I'm just wondering, what is the massive concern people have re. chatting in the picture threads? I find that when chats happen there they're easier to follow than in this thread. Is it that hard to skip past the chatter?

I've highlighted the key elements for you.

It ruins the flow of the thread and allow it enough and the thread will be just all chat.

I have zero interest in whatever you or anybody else have to say in YLYL. I come here if I want to know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,294 ✭✭✭✭Penn

    From the YLYL first post:
This is a picture thread only

Excessive chat will result in cranky mods and possibly bans and infractions and all that crap.

The problem with chat is it nearly always leads to more chat, and the thread isn't for chat, it's for funny pictures. That's why it's such a popular thread, people can click into it, see a few funny pictures, then leave. Chat damages that, because it ruins the flow of the thread, goes against the purpose of the thread, and more often than not, is just completely unnecessary.

The chat from last night for example, one unnecessary chat post meant that someone responded in chat. Then another. Then another. Then a chat post complaining about chat posts. Then some pics about chat posts (two of which I've deleted). All of a sudden, we have 8 or 9 completely unnecessary posts, when most people view Boards with 15 posts per page.

This thread came from feedback from posters in order to keep chat out of YLYL. It's where everyone can chat away to their hearts content without ruining the flow and purpose of YLYL. It's been a long established rule to not chat in YLYL, so to see people still chat there, especially given that we have this thread here... there's simply no excuse.

Look, one or two chat posts and then back to pics, I normally just let it slide, as it's not something we want to have to action. But when it begins to derail the thread, posters simply have to be actioned for it.

Fairy nuf, thanks for the explainer. Like I said, doesn't bother me, can see why it might irk others though...

What does bother me is people who post non-funny things (by which I mean "inspirational" pics or the likes) just so more people will view them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,339 ✭✭✭Artful_Badger

I dont mind the odd post if its funny and relevant but when it turns into chat it really annoys me. And I guess you cant have one without the other.

As for things not being funny, there's a lot of it in YLYL and people on the whole seem to go along with it so it must be somewhat entertaining for people. Take the "Your dad is dead" text conversation. For starters its more than likely fake, then its not even funny its just something that gets people to say "Well said, right on, I agree with this guy".

Title should be changed to "You Laugh/You agree with the sentiment You lose 5 MildlyAmusington.

    Thanks-whoring, pure and simple.

There's also a tendency to post policital/social message posters in there.
If a picture isn't even supposed to be funny then it shouldn't be in YLYL. There's other threads for that kind of stuff.
I'd love to see infractions being handed out for some of those tbh.

    Blatant thanks-whoring.

It's a cool picture, and is intended as such. It doesn't try to be a funny picture, it's not presented as a funny picture and I'm pretty sure it was posted because it's cool, not because anyone thinks it funny.
As such, surely it belongs in the Cool Pictures thread, not here.

Or maybe we should start posting "Guess the Town" pictures in this thread too, because it'd get more views

I don't think it is meant to be funny but more that it is someone writing from a position of ignorance being refuted by someone who obviously knows what they are talking about.

In FPS games they're usually an indicator of where the grenade that's just been thrown at you is. So you know which direction to run in to get away.

    A boiling ball bearing..

I think it's a cannonball or something similar, heated until literally red hot, then dropped onto the block of ice. Looks pretty cool melting the ice on it's way through/down.
