Why do people close boards accounts?

I have a better question... How do people with 10000+ posts get themselves banned? Surely at that point you're around long enough to know the rules... Or do they just go a bit mad from all the boardsing? Is this something i should be worried about in about 274 years (at my current post rate) when i'm nearing 10000?

Tired of playing by the rules, want to go out with a bang. Think of it as "suicide by mod/admin"

I know someone who closed their account because the were "outed" for want of a better word. Someone found out their username and told all and sundry who they were on here. They closed their account. You never know why it is done. That is one of any number of reasons.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,143 ✭✭✭Thumby

@bubblewrap, i did say in my post some of it not all of it was imo attention seeking. I'm the last person to tar everyone with the same brush, as like you said i don't know them or their situation.

Who cares really - even this topic people want to over analysis it and make character judgements, just goes to show what an other poster said about how wrapped up people get to boards.

I don't want to name names but I know for a fact that the reason why so many high post count members quit the site this year is because they were uncovered as an online pedophile ring.

The game was up and a few of them were caught sharing kiddy porn on line so they all ran to the hills and tried to close down as much of their on line presence as possible.

    Sickos...

I had to close an old account i used to have cos some friends found out my username and any time we were having a few drinks they would pull out the laptop and see what i was saying so that was the end of that.

I think its unfair to judge someone as an attenion seeker, if you dont know that him/her personly. you dont know what he/she is going through in there life.

Ya but think about it what could happen in your life to make you want to close it. "Oh no my family has died and ive been diagnosed with a terminal illness. I think i need to close my boards account" It doesnt make sense.

You could argue that someone whos identity has been linked to their account might have a reason to close it but again that solves nothing since their posting history isnt cleared.

I saw a like of Facebook today that said that closing your Facebook account is the modern equivalent of running away from home.....:pac: same goes for boards I spose.

I bet someone bumps this thread in the future, and they will see more than one of the posters who have said 'I can't understand why anyone closes their account', will have 'Closed Account' beside their name.

Everyone's time here comes to an end sooner or later. Like life itself.

Maybe there should be a monthly cull decided by a poll. Last day of the month everybody goes click happy and the five with the most Phukoffs must fight in a gladiator style fight with the others. The winner is allowed re-reg.

I don't see the point in closing your account because you don't have enough time. Come back to it when you have the time to post. I'd be fairly confident most prominent users who've cancelled their accounts read boards every now and then anyway.

Actually going to the trouble of closing your account is a bit dramatic tbh.

Its only dramatic because people like you think it is. If someone closes their account and doesnt say anything about it then thats it, the end, no need to get all upset over it and call them dramatic. Its dramatic when they post a big goodbye message but then who gives 2 craps because its only the internet.

But why close your account that you have thousands of posts with and then open a new one a few days later?

Closing their account and opening a new one means they can still post here, but aren't necessarily linked to their old account - as you would be if you just changed your name.

Although, some people will say 'I used to be X', which defeats the purpose of the above reason for closing the account in the first place.

After that its the persons personal choice, or maybe they just wanted to start a new leaf with a new personality etc. I just want to reiterate that anybody who deems it "attention seeking", is an idiot.

I can understand why some people do it. Not anonymous anymore, want to start afresh etc. But since the option has been there, I think a lot of cowards use it. i.e, they look bad in an argument and close their accounts and reopen again.

AH is now riddled with so many re-regges that it takes away from the community in a big way. There are so many unknown quantities now and it takes time for a new poster to build up that reputation or rappore or whatever.

QFT, I know most people wouldn't be very familiar with me but a few would 'know me to see me' or whatever the boards equivalent is. There was even a few names knocking around that I used to play Quake with.

You might not know someone well but you get a general feel for what someone is like and judge/understand their posts accordingly. People closing their accounts after every dozen posts destroys this. Might as well be posting everything under 'anonymous'.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,073 ✭✭✭Pottler

ive considered it a lot over the last while, just havent got much time now to be on. i probably will once the little fella gets bigger
I think taking time out for personal surgery is great. Good luck with the enhancement, I'm sure it will all be worth it in the end.(bigger IS better) Could you not still post while recuperating?

over the last good while i have felt very different posting in AH. i notice people now seem to hop on you when you post a thread/post. im probably going to close my account very soon and AH is one place i wont miss at all

That's a load of shizzle. I suppose because people are more anonymous than before with the close account thing so they just post whatever shite they feel like with little fear of repercussions in the future. I think maybe there should be a postcount minimum to close a person's account. Like maybe 500 or something.

Agreed. I do think that AH has deteriorated recently. The Olympics thread was brilliant and maybe it's a hangover from that?

But I do find myself clicking into less and les threads...

If you take every mess and slagging as a personal insult it makes sense. If you take it as it's intended, ie, a light hearted mess and slagging, it's just a bit of fun. I suppose people have different senses of humour, but really, I'm only messing and not trying to drag you down.:)

@bubblewrap, ah no worries, i know it wasn't an attack and i def didn't take it as such. I just figured i'd be better off clarifying what i meant because after rereading my post i copped that it comes across as slightly judgemental. I don't doubt that there some very legimitate reasons for closing an account, its just the ones who make a big production/song and dance out of leaveing/returning that gets my goat.

Seriously, this is getting out of hand! The amount of old posters with new accounts is bananas. It's starting to become a pet peeve.

I'm beginning to consider adding these popele to the ignore list! >:(

How do you differentiate between a bona fide newbie and a rereg then? (That's not a joke by the way - genuinely curious)

Add a lurker to that list. I know a bit about boards and I've only had two accounts; this one and one I made about 6 years ago which I forget the name and email of and used it to asked about setting an Xbox up and had only that one lousy post.

With a rereg usually people have an idea since it's mostly common sense.

I mean if suddenly my account gets closed and someone pops up with the same style of typing/beliefs/sense of humour/etc then it's fairly obvious it's that annoying fecker again :pac:

Lurkers probably know a good bit about the boards from just lurking since (I won't name names but it's myself) spent a long time just watching AH before they registered.

A newbie is a person who isn't given free coke and hookers (could be a snitch for the gardaí). :D

Ultimately it doesn't really matter for most people if you're new or whatnot (that goes for pretty much every site) once you're not a troublemaker.
Unless you are a troublemaker and then you get banned, investigated, denied removal of the siteban and your head is placed on a pike.

There are lots of reasons - some that others will never know about because of behind the scenes happenings. It's presumptuous and arrogant to just state it's for attention - and oh so big and brave when the person isn't there to defend themselves. Some people come back and don't change their posting style but they're still off whatever radar they want to be off - and they really don't care if others make "Oh you're a re-reg" type comments so the latter should probably stop obsessing over it. Saying publicly "You used to be [name of poster]" though, is uncalled for, and I'm sure some forums don't allow it.

Yes there are indeed some posters who have said in the past they don't see the point of it and that it's attention- seeking etc... only to do it themselves. So you just never know what can happen to cause it. If there was a more subtle way to slink off rather than have "closed account" under a username, plenty would prefer it. Not everyone is trying to create drama.

Experience! Posting style, content and reactions to be honest. The same people seem to post in the same thread, posting the same things. After having numerous conversations with some people over years, you recognise them

Honestly? Like what? I stand to be corrected. :o
It sounds very CT to be honest. Are you suggesting that there's a big bully ring or something? can't understand how there isn't an element of attention seeking. But again, I stand to be corrected.
It's presumptuous and arrogant to just state it's for attention
Is it? Why wouldn't the user just ignore others? Or leave altogether? But again, I stand to be corrected.
and oh so big and brave when the person isn't there to defend themselves.
Well if they are a rereg they are here to defend themselves!?!
If there was a more subtle way to slink off rather than have "closed account" under a username, plenty would prefer it. Not everyone is trying to create drama.
Isn't there? Can't you just rereg & not close?

People say, "oh if someone closes their account, you know who they are if they re-reg"!? I most certainly wouldn't know. to me all the posts look the same. etc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,327 ✭✭✭Madam_X

Zulu, no, not a bully ring or anything CT or organised - individual situations, e.g. with other posters (for instance there are Boards relationships - a break-up seems a very logical reason to close an account), maybe Boards life and real life getting too blurred and unwanted aspects creeping in, anonymity being compromised - being recognised by people they'd rather not be recognised by, could be all kinds. Maybe "behind the scenes" is the wrong expression.
A re-reg can't defend themselves when digs are being made about their previous incarnation in fairness. As someone said: why would you re-reg and saunter in with "It's me, I'm back!"? I know a person can be recognised via their posting style but it's still far more anonymous than "It's me again!" It can't be proven for certain that it's always for attention - lots of people would hate a fuss being made, but if there is to be any fuss, just staying away from Boards for a few days will remedy that; the fuss dies down quickly and they're forgotten about.
The fact the button is simply *there* too is probably tempting for many. It's no doubt being abused though and it wouldn't surprise me if it were discontinued.
I suppose you could re-reg and not close your old account, that's true, but I guess some folks would prefer not to have a dormant account just sitting in limbo.
