Very clear looking at recent Kona photos that at my previous lowest of 65kg in 2011 i was not at optimal race weight and probably done the weight wrong. Only 2kg put on since Barca but my aim is to be in that shape coming into Abu Dhabi Tri.

Working my way down slowly, had got to 86kg but ended up off my feet for 10 days with chest infection so back up to 88kg. Feel a good week ahead, full training planned and some very disciplined eating. Want 86.5kg by this time next week.0 -

So having been in UCD for a Dexa scan I can confirm my original body fat percentage was rubbish. Weight still dropping but body fat from heading in right direction so drastic measures will be taken. Just shows the level of inconsistency thats out there. I was tested with calipers, better to know I guess and approach it accurately than be fooling yourself.0 -

Diet is going to be very clean and i will be off the booze come Jan up until Abu Dhabi in March, 63.5kg is still doable as long as i do not pile any weight on over Xmas.0 -

Not sure I agree with you Halftri. I'm about 2cm shorter than jackyback and usually weigh in or around the weight he is aiming for. No problems with sickness or injuries here (have now done around 42 days training in a row with most being double days). I reckon I could even lose a few more kg's myself before I would be starting to sacrifice strength. From reading jackyback's log as well I'd say he is fairly up on his training and knows how far he needs to go with losing weight.0

Have you been that weight long?
Trying to lose weight and maintain strength is hard - a fine line really.
Losing weight is easy when training for ironman. Maintaining strength isn't.
6.5% Bodyfat is low enough. I did 2 ironmans this season. Bodyfat was the last thing that entered my head. And i'd be guessing but for my second ironman - my percentage bodyfat was higher than the first (I was a bit heavier). It was also my better race and that extra bit of weight was what I believe made the difference.
If you've done something like a sub 9 hour ironman and are working on the small things - then you prob could look at bodyfat to knock out more minutes but for most AG's - there's no need to worry about it. There's alot more things to work on before it.

Weight if done correctly should not impact on your points 1 & 2 and its still doable to become stronger on the bike whilst losing weight, difficult but not impossible. Clean diet, going off the booze and the ramp up in training itself will look after most of the weight loss.

Despite my observations, and your wifes aggrement on Saturday night about you "being short" (although that *may* have been in a different context) I think that 63.5 is not going to happen. 65 I suspect would do it for you,:eek: V v light man (even at your height!). Why does light mean weak? Its how you get there not being there that is the issue.

Despite my observations, and your wifes aggrement on Saturday night about you "being short" (although that *may* have been in a different context) I think that 63.5 is not going to happen. 65 I suspect would do it for you,
Why does light mean weak? Its how you get there not being there that is the issue.

Small difference tunney - Wiggins/contrador are pro's. We're age groupers. I dont think we should be comparing ourselves to them. They've Alot of time to work on strength etc. Alot more than the average age grouper.
As I said - only a small point. But for me anyway - I know my training performance and energy levels drop when weight dips under a certain mark.0 -
Extra weight through bodyfat can't be a benefit to your performance. I know I can easily afford to lose 5/6 - 8kg of bodyfat (probably more) while retaining the same muscle mass.0

I don't think it's down to strength training to lose weight and keep strength, pros have many more hours to train a week than any of us and spend an awful lot of time (80%) in Z1, at that kind of wattage/RER I'd be looking at ~63% fuel from fat, they'd probably be looking at more. They'd also have access to nutritionists that work with their coaches to fuel their workouts correctly I'd imagine based on workloads, phases etc. Something you can do yourself if you've got the data and are bothered working it out.
Gaining or losing weight all comes down to nutrition and how quickly or slowly you do it, the longer the period the better quality results you're likely to see, like trying to go +/- 3 kg in 2 weeks is bound for disaster, aiming for 12 weeks and you're going to get better results but you still need to roughly know what you're aiming for kcal / macronutrients wise, or at least know what has worked for you in the past.0 -

If your heavy - of course you need to lose weight to perform. That's not the point.
For an age grouper - knowing bodyfat isn't very important. If 2 different people measure you - you'll prob get different results. I got scanned once about 2 years ago. She said when testing this is lightly to be higher than any other test you've done but it's the right one.
My bodyfat / weight wouldn't be high but from experience - I've performed better when a kg or two heavier. Therefore I know - when dropping below that weight - I prob won't perform as well.
But if an athlete thinks the more weight they lose - the faster they will become. I don't think that's necessarily true.0
