There should just be a data enabled check box somewhere in settings > wireless and networks

Settings>Wireless & network settings>Mobile networks>Data Enabled [ ] <- check this off.

there is an app called APNdroid iirc

can install a widget on the screen that is easy to turn on/off

if off you will not connect to 3g but when you turn on wifi it doesn't block it. very handy
