Oak aged stout

I'm planning on making a strong stout for Christmas at the weekend. I've got a Coopers stout kit and dark ale kit. I plan on using the two kits with 1kg of dark spray malt. I also ordered a bag of oak chips. I'm thinking of soaking them in whiskey before adding to the beer.
Any tips on how long they should be soaked for(or even if they should be) and when to put them in? Theres lots of conflicting information online. Any advice will be much appreciated, thanks.

Depends on if you want a whiskey flavour or just an oaky vanilla flavour.
Don't expect the likes of a full barrel aged imperial stout though, not with oak chips.
