There are the meet & train leagues, which seem like a good way to get women competing in cross country. And the BHAA's mixed calendar, of XC, road, and track is great too for getting people out of their comfort zone.

Decent results in Burgos for Irish especially Sean Tobin. Women's team look to be in decent shape as well

Big day In the US tomorrow for many our cross guys and gals. O Neil and Rooney go head to head to see who gets the nod for Euro Seniors while the much atiscipated battle between Shane Quinn and Jake Byrne commences. I have stated from the start of the season that Quinn will win the battle much to the disgust of some of our posters. I guess tomorrow will tell a tale and a half.

Also my old Alma Mater UCD will hope to retain the IUAA Road Relay title tomorrow afternoon in Maynooth. A number of guys will be looking to show form ahead of the Euro Under 23 trial next weekend. Expect good runs from contenders for that team like Chris Johnson, Patrick Hogan, Liam Tremble and Emmett Jennings if fit.

Also this weekend (Sunday) sees a significant IAAF Cross Country permit race goes ahead in Soria, Spain. Irish eyes will be on Linda Byrne who will make her season debut. It will be interesting to see what kind of shape she is. A good result would certainly bolster hopes of a possible team medal challenge by our senior women at next months Euro XC. Also competing in the same race is Sara Tracey who had a strong run in England last month.

UCD Men defend title in Road Relays

Rooney looks roughly 6th or 7th in NCAAs

Also looks like Collins (10th ish) Providence team won the womens (though that is very unofficial as there is alot of confusion over results)

O Neill just outside the All American spots with a top 30 finish

Great results from the NCAAs - an Irish top 10 finisher in both the men and women's race.

Sarah Collins in her first year at Providence, yes?

    Ouch!

I omitted Rooney more out of forgetfulness rather than anything else. Jogging Newbie went on to post numerous times about how Jake Byrne was going to teach Shane Quinn a lesson at NCAAs. Anyway us UCD alumini should not be bickering at each other on this joyous day, the day UCD have cemented themselves as the kingpins of Irish Intervarsity athletics!

Would Quinn be happy with this? I only ask cause I know he was highly thought of in schools athletics before he headed to states last year. How do you think he compares potential wise to say english who is similiar age or dave mccarthy who is maybe 3 years older? Thanks for info

Some run from Collins in 10th as a freshman. There were 6 seniors ahead of her who won't be back next year.

Rooney was 1st non-African home with 5 Kenyans and an Ethiopian (albeit a US citizen) ahead of him. I think the first American was the Maverick Darling in 11th. It was an outstanding run when you look at the track credentials of the athletes who beat him.

Interesting to see what happens with Euro Cross now. It is incredibly difficult to keep it going after NCAAs (look at Ledwith in 2008) but I presume they both want to come home for it?

English is a phenom so cant really compare to him but yes it will be interesting to see how Shane stacks up against Dave Mc when his cross country career is finished. I suspect he may surpass what Dave has done in the US in the cross country but not on the indoor track.Im not sure he has the wheels

You missed Tommy Casey from Sligo who had a really good run(67th) for a guy better known as a track runner.

4th leg really killed them. Always gonna struggle with an 800 guy on the 2 mile leg against that UCD teams which for the most part was strength based runners. I think the focus of the DCU team is on the shorter distance which will become apparent on track. Good to see Joe and Al in action been a while since have seen both back in the hornets/bears colours together for the first time in a long while

XC in March should be very interesting

In fairness DCU's second man on the two mile leg is a 3.42 1500 guy so perhaps he just had an off day as often happens. Anyway they missed Emmet Jennings or Jayne Rossitor to solidify their lead.

It is very hard to see Big Joe and Alan Mc togging out for a cross country race after the season is over.

Given its around the time of the Inter clubs I wouldnt say its exactly out of season for anyone targetting that or the world XC

Very close race between DCU and UCD. The final runner from DCU (Brian Kelly) ran a storming leg according to times but Mark English just held on. DCU could have gained another ten seconds if you take a 2 mile runner from their 'B' team but that's racing I guess!

Looking ahead to the inter-counties this weekend - most of the top performers on the day will probably compete and aim to get on the Irish team!

    Mens
    3 mile legs:
    Joe Sweeney (Sen) 13.46
    John Coughlan (Sen) 14.01
    John Travers (U23) 14.20
    Patrick Hogan (U23) 14.35

    2 mile legs:
    Paul Robinson (U23) 8.57
    Chris Johnston (U23) 9.15
    Alan McCormack (Sen) 9.22
    Liam Tremble (U23) 9.27
    Liam Brady (U23) 9.33

    Womens
    2 mile legs:
    Laura Crowe (Sen) 10.32
    Laura Behan (U23) 10.53
    Sinead O'Conner (Sen) 11.13
    Mary Mulhare (Jun) 11.17
    Una Britton (U23) 11.34
    1 mile leg:
Mary Ann O Sullivan (Jun) 5.08

After the NCCA's there will be also some athletes in with a good shout of being drafted onto the teams! The races and team selections will be exciting next weekend.

Surely Mark English was only cruising or is he the typical 400/800m type athlete?

If not whos the money on, Mccarthy, Sweeney, Pollock if they run must be favourites??
Id say it will be heavy going in Fairyhouse...

English would struggle to gat a mile. However he ran a very smart race when Kelly closed on him. He used the layout of the course to his advantage. The finish was very close to a sharp bend. English held a line on the bend meaning Kelly couldn't get to his shoulder. He then had enough of a kick to just hold on. English knows how to close out races.
There were two great races on the day. Laura Crowe stood out in the womans race with Maryann O'Sullivan also impressing with a very strong last leg to take DCU to victory.
The mens race was a super race. A nine mile race over five legs with less than 0.5 seconds seperating the two teams. There were so many good individual performances. Warne, Robinson and Kelly were superb for DCU with Coghlan also being impressive. Sweeney impressed and did enough to get UCD back in touch on his leg. Johnston's run will achieve legendary status in UCD. Once he realised McBrearty was in trouble he went after him like a man possessed. His final 400m was the winning of the race.
Good run by Travers too. He was in a lot of traffic and must have passed more athetes than anyone else on the course.

Raheny Shamrock Runner. been over there three years (I think could be 4). Ran the Euro's this year in the 10000m and was on the Gold medal u23 team from XC last year. In terms of Rio the man just behind him at weekend was a 27.30 Olympian

With only a few days to go to the Inter-counties, who do we expect to feature to the fore of each category?

Any word on the progress of Mary Cullen? Competition for the senior women's category is heating up, and much stronger than in previous years. They may well be the highest placed Irish team in the upcoming Europeans! Athletes including Fionnuala Britton, Linda Byrne, Ava Hutchinson, Maria McCambridge (depending on her recovery from DCM), Sara Treacy, Sarah McCormack, Kerry Harty amongst others will all battle it out for team places (numbering possibly 4/5/6).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 468 ✭✭runjb

Fionnuala Britton (Racing on the same day in Cross de LAcier), Linda Byrne (Recovering from a recent illness) and David McCarthy (suffering from a minor knee injury) not racing on Sunday.

    Good preview available here:

Well we are very proud of our individual winner today. Four years ago he ran in his first nationals and finished last. Thankfully he persevered and improved gradually. Today he fufilled his potential with a very impressive victory. It shows what can be achieved with hard work, self belief and an excellent attitude.

Great race in the mens. Mulhare took the lead in the first lap and was going strong but Joe put the foot down and never looked back. Hehir managed to catch Mulhare but this was short lived as Mick managed to fight back

4th was Scullion with Maher and Joe Mac following closely

Anyone at the races? Did Paul Pollock ran at the front and then suffer? Understandable after his marathon. Superb running from Sean Hehir stepping down in distance and running in the mud.

Rumour has it McCarthy, Rooney and O'Neill are getting selected for Euros but will wait and see what is officially announced.

For all the talk of a strong senior women's team for Euro Cross, that was a very weak nationals.

Can understand why Rooney and oneill weren't there yesterday and NCAA performances would put them in picture for selection. What's the story with McCarthy though? Is he not based in Ireland now? Why didnt he run yesterday? Injury?

Ran it yesterday but well down the field, only saw lead group first couple of laps , Hehir took it on lap one, then mulhare end lap one/lap two and a bit and then joe took over..pollock was never well up bar very start, marathon hangover perhaps .It was a
terribly muddy course, flat, lots of switchbacks 90 degrees, but almost as bad in parts as ALSAA a couple of years back in the intermediates. Very close in the team , Antrim on countback.
A very high standard in mens, deep field, when you see Mckinney in 55th for eg
Womens was an exciting race, lead changed hands on last lap a couple of times. I thought it was as strong a field as there is bearing in mind Britton Byrne were not running and had flagged it . But no sign of Treacy/Mccambridge.
Mccarthy had pulled out a day or two before illness, but is surely strong enough for Euro team.

    thats a surprise.

Only two under 23 women surely a team should be sent ..?

McCarthy must be still suffering from the minor injury? Team seems well balanced. The senior women's team seem best placed to score highly. Maybe the junior women's team can do well when Collins is in the mix.

The women U23 will have no team once again, it has been the same case over the last number of years and has resulted unfortunetly in a lot of athletes falling off the cross country scene at the grade. The U23 women would probably do just as well as their male counterparts at the European XC but the team management must be the wiser???

Picked up a knee injury, that's why he didn't run yesterday and ruled himself out of Euro's.
He is to have an MRI during the week
