Flotrack Ireland leaves a lot to be desired. All it does is film Donegal road races and and a few track races a year. There is no commentary, analysis, interviews, workouts outside of Letterkenny, blogs etc. The video man is not to blame as he has a full time job but surely someone in Irish athletics has the skills to put forward a professional package like eightlane over in England.

We need to promote and develop this sport if we want it to grow and prosper.

Some good results from Vienna last night. Rose-Anne Galligan finished 3rd in the 1500m in 4:14.53, with Claire Tarplee setting a PB (by ten seconds) one place behind with 4.14.58 - an overall PB in the 1500m. Eoin Everard set a PB in the 1500m B race, with a 3:47.69 clocking.

Fionnuala Britton goes in Germany (Karlsruhe) on Saturday in the IAAF Indoor Permit meet, racing 3000m. Up against a host of big names including Meseret Defar, Mimi Belete, Nancy Chepkwemoi and Gete Dima so should hopefully pull her to a good time. Her indoor PB is 9 minutes flat.

O Lionaird down for the 3k in the NB Games tomorrow. Has the making of a very fast race with Rupp, Gebremeskel and Gebrewhet in the field.

He has on his twitter though that he had to get doc appointment on short notice though so hopefully this is routine and he toes the line tomorrow

Interesting result from the University Indoors in Athlone last friday was the Men's combined events. Kourosh Foroughi, the high jumper beating Michael Bowler, the AAI senior champ indoors and outdoors in a new IUAA record.

He won it fairly handy in end , the advantages of youth i reckon !

Good sized fields in all races which was encouraging to see for XC , despite a long haul up to Derry for some ...The course was decent running, but facilities such as showers, and some basic freebie refreshments could be thrown on for runners , aside from that things went well.
The girl from Raheny and Johnson look like they are good prospects.
Good race up the front of the Masters from what i could see from a bit back in the pack , P Matthews keeps rolling on.

What you will find here is that an athlete in good shape will not suffer greatly from a 3k. There overall fitness means that if anything he felt sharp for the mudfest that insued. Now I dont thing anyone yesterday would fancy a 3k tomorrow however.

    Looks like there will be a few fast races this weekend;

    http://www.athleticsireland.ie/content/?p=29925

Think its great trying to organise these showcase races into existing programmes. Gives athletes the chance to chase standards here in Ireland and also generates a bit better crowds for the Junior and U 23s hopefully

College commitments wouldnt allow him to travel AKAIK with NCAAs the following week (Especially with Arkansas hosting it no doubt he will be running 800 and DMR)

What a weekend for Irish athletics!

Nominations for performance of the week:
Ciara Everard breaking 22 year old record.
Sarah Lavin taking Derval's junior record.
In championship medal terms, Brian Gregan's win over Jonathon Borlee may be the best.

The Rugby Lads might not have done the business over the weekend but the Athletics folks certainly did the business

Derval moves her seasons best down to 8.08 when finishing 5th in Val-de-Reuil. Talay (Belerus) won in a very impressive 7.94.

However, all is moving well for Derval, only 2nd outing of the season for her. She races in Nationals this weekend in her trademark 60m hurdles and possibly the 60m too.

Great stuff....think she said on Twitter that she's running Birmingham Grand Prix on the 16th also. Would be great to see her dip under 8 seconds, will give us a reminder of just how special an athlete she is....it's easy to take her talents for granted as we're just so used to her putting down great times and top class performances season after season.

That 7.84 in Moscow in '06 is a serious time to have on one's C.V.

While not in that range now, I think a low 7.9x will medal given Nytra and Vukicevic don't seem to be around. Porter, Talay and Kondakova will be right up there, and I wouldn't discount Eline 'Ball' Berings (sorry, bad joke) either.

However, Berlin '09 taught me never, ever count out the D'OR.

There won't be anyone doubling up at nationals. For some reason the finals of the 60m and 60m hurdles are five minutes apart.
